Description:Increased development has spurred the need for better planning and controlled growth in the coastal areas of North Carolina (coastal zone management). A detailed classification system, which is compatible with the national system for mapping land use and land cover is presented for the barrier islands. Seven additional categories to the U.S.G.S. 2-level system of land use and land cover are described and illustrated with more than 100 aerial and ground photographs. Coastal managers, planners, business owners and government officials can use the information for quick and positive classification decisions and as benchmark data against which future changes can be measured.
