Description:Incidental harvesting or by-catch of fish and shellfish has become an issue of increasing concern to fishery administrators, managers, research scientists, and industry and recreational fishing associations. Much of this concern stems from the belief that the incidental harvests of some spieces is quite high and may have important ramifications for the ecoysystem and for the populations of important commerical and recreational species of fish. The Atlantic menhaden fishery in the Mid-Atlantic Bight is one fishery in which there are major concerns about the nature and extent of by-catch. This study was undertaken to assess by- catch in the Atlantic menhaden fishery in 1992 and to evaluate various methods to estimate by-catch. The report provides a brief overview of the menhadden fishery; the sampling strategy and associated methodology; and results and finding of the study.
