Description:Zebra mussels were first officially reported in the Great Lakes in June 1988. However, given the mussels' size, it is estimated that zebra mussels were introduced into the Great Lakes in 1985 or 1986, when one or more transoceanic ships discharged ballast water into Lake St. Clair. This report summarizes the research and outreach efforts of the National Sea Grant College Program to address the problems and issues associated with the invasion of the Great Lakes region and eastern United States by the zebra mussel "Dreissena polymorpha" and the quagga mussel "Dreissena bugensis".
