Description:Most of the world's nations signed the Law of the Sea Convention in December 1982, and even those nations that did not sign--like the United States--view it as the governing blueprint on navigational rights and duties. Nonetheless, a body of agreed principles that can truly regulate navigation on the high seas and in the various jurisdictional zones of the oceans is still in an evolutionary state and many conflicts can be expected. What can we expect from the evolving customary law of the sea of the future? The papers and discussions in this volume, based on a conference held in Honolulu in January 1986, explore many of the questions and potential problems that can be foreseen. The participants included distinguished scholars, diplomats, and jurists
