Description:Maritime occupations, such as commercial fishing, are inherently risky and have above-average casualty rates. The causes of these high accident rates are complex, involving environmental, engineering, and human factors. This publication is a compilation of papers presented at the Training and Technology for Safety at Sea International Symposium, held in September 1990 in Sitka, Alaska, in conjunction with the annual meeting of the International Association for Sea Survival Training. The theme of the symposium was 'Training + Equipment + Attitude = Survival,' promoting an interdisciplinary approach to marine safety that includes effective training, proper equipment, and safe attitudes. Presentations were solicited from representatives of commercial fishing ventures, regulatory and safety advisory agencies, equipment manufacturers, and emergency medical experts. They address a variety subjects relating to the interdisciplinary theme of the symposium.
