Description:Hard clams, "Mercenaria mercenaria," are bringing record prices in seafood markets, but natural populations soon may be overfished. Clam gardening is a form of aquaculture in which seed, or baby clams, are raised on estuarine bottom leased from the state. The clams feed on naturally occurring food and are protected from predators until they reach a marketable size. This booklet addresses the culture of the northern hard clam. It also deals with potential problems in obtaining leases and provides basic information needed for successful clam gardening. Sample management forms, an extensive bibliography, and lists of suppliers to the clam aquaculture industry are included.
