Description:The goal of this project was to investigate the experiences of former full-time commercial fishermen of Carteret County who sought alternative sources of employment. The intention was to query people who had completely abandoned fishing as to what type of new employment they found, what fishing skills were transferable, what training programs were utilized, what level of job satisfaction they now had, and what impact their new work had on family life and income levels. It was discovered that a true "ex-fisherman" was hard to find in Carteret County; the majority of people contacted held non-fishing jobs but continued to have some participation in commercial harvesting. The substitutes or supplemental jobs that underemployed fishers obtained tended to be "blue-collar," seamanship-related. Recommendations are made for how to ease back transition, and expand non-fishing job opportunities.
