Parental priming, or the exposure of broodstock to adverse environmental conditions as they undergo gametogenesis, holds promise as a method to increase resilience in bivalve offspring. We exposed Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) broodstock to low pH conditions (pH 7.4 for 78 days during gametogenesis). Larvae were produced from primed (low pH) and unprimed (ambient pH) broodstock and exposed to ambient or low pH conditions in a full factorial design. Larval phenotype in response to low pH was partially rescued by broodstock priming: larvae from low pH-exposed broodstock had better survival and growth than larvae from broodstock held under ambient conditions. Clam egg lipidomic and transcriptomic analyses were performed to determine the physiological differences associated with broodstock environmental conditions. Egg lipid abundance profiles were not significantly different between parental treatments. The egg transcriptome revealed 48 differentially expressed transcripts associated with parental environmental conditions. These genes are involved in important processes for early larval physiology, including metabolism, cell cycle, and transcriptional regulation. Broodstock clams were minimally impacted by their exposure to low pH for 78 days, however we show here that subtle maternal signals may contribute to the vastly improved larval performance observed under low pH conditions. Within saltmarshes, there are two genetically and phenotypically distinct forms of S. alterniflora: a tall-form (>1 m in height) that grows along the edge of tidal creeks and a short-form (<0.5 m) found further inland. Due to their locations, the two forms are exposed to different degrees of tidal inundation with tall-form plants in our research area (Charleston, SC, USA) experiencing two tidal cycles each day, while short-form plants experience immersive high tides less frequently. Marsh exposure to oil following a spill can inhibit growth and lead to eventual mortality of S. alterniflora. However, studies have yet to examine the impacts of oil on these two forms of S. alterniflora with a cyclical tidal exposure. This study used microcosm systems (12-gallon buckets with simulated tidal cycles) to examine the impact of No. 2 fuel oil on short-and tall-forms of S. alterniflora exposed to two tidal regimes. Half of the systems were dosed with marine diesel fuel to a 0.1 mm slick thickness, while half remained unoiled controls. Within each oiling condition, there were two different tidal simulations: 1) a daily simulation which received two high and two low tide events each day and 2) a weekly simulation with two high tides every Wednesday. Short- and tall-form plants were grown from seed to minimize environmental differences during development and placed into both tidal simulations. All treatments included four replicate microcosms resulting in 32 systems total. Measurements of plant growth, plant mortality, water quality, and water hydrocarbon concentrations were taken for up to three months following oil exposure. At the conclusion of the study, above- and below-ground S. alterniflora dry biomass was also measured. Results indicate that the fastest mortality rates among oiled treatments occurred for short-form plants exposed to weekly tides, while tall-form plants with daily tides exhibited the slowest mortality rates. This data elucidates the impact of No. 2 fuel oil spills on different areas of the marsh and may help inform future restoration efforts considering replanting short- or tall-forms in oil-contaminated environments post-spill. Understanding spatial variations of blue carbon storage at the landscape or local scale is important for developing carbon inventories, guiding ecological restorations, and informing habitat management strategies. We investigated the potential of spectral index records from the Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager spanning from 2014 to 2023 for mapping blue carbon storage in the soils of two tidal salt marsh systems in the Mid-Atlantic United States. The decadal mean of a non-photosynthetic vegetation index and standard deviations of a normalized difference vegetation index and a modified normalized difference water index were identified as predictors of blue carbon. These predictors were used to train a gradient boosted trees model for predicting soil organic matter content that achieved a testing set r-squared value of 0.67. We estimated that the two study marshes stored a combined 133–208 Gg of organic carbon in the top 30 cm of soil. We emphasize the need for better quantification of deep soil carbon in tidal salt marsh systems, which is likely quite high, and demonstrate the potential for satellite-based mapping of blue carbon within individual tidal wetland systems. The growing array of impacts is large and varied, threatening human health, marine and freshwater wildlife, and ecosystems upon which many nations rely on for food, recreation, tourism, and a plethora of other goods and services. Although the HAB burden has grown substantially over the past few decades, marine and estuarine HAB control remains one of the least developed areas of HAB science. The disconnect between HAB control needs and solutions stems in part from public, stakeholder, and scientific uncertainties about the balance between benefits and potentially undesirable environmental consequences. Other more practical challenges can include substantial regulation of in situ testing, scaling up laboratory-proven technologies to attack widespread blooms that can move in three dimensions in open marine waters, and an immature commercial market. Here we describe the status of control strategies targeting marine coastal and estuarine HABs, in particular those few approaches that have been tested in mesocosm or field applications. We identify the regulatory support, targeted science, investments, and public outreach that will be needed to accelerate the availability of applications for controlling HABs in marine waters worldwide. This research sees the advancement and implementation of the Individual-Based Lobster Simulator, an individual-based modelling framework, to simulate American lobster (Homarus americanus) stock dynamics in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank region under a suite of climate change and management scenarios. With impacts of warming waters directly considered, the stock was projected out to equilibria under scenarios of status quo management and alternative future management schema. This analysis allowed for evaluation of the effectiveness and overall impact of alternative regulatory measures on the stock for a given climate change scenario. We conclude that regulatory changes were generally effective at maintaining spawning biomass and legal biomass under climate scenarios but were less effective at maintaining recruitment and landed catch. Furthermore, a given management action had less effectiveness at maintaining stock levels under increased levels of climate change. Many of the techniques used to clean oiled shorelines can cause additional damage in marshlands and are not viable treatment options in these sensitive environments. During the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, a wide variety of clean-up and primary restoration tactics were investigated in the most heavily impacted coastal marshes of Louisiana, USA. Subsequent monitoring revealed that one of the most beneficial tactics employed was to replant native grasses in the impacted areas. The objective of this study is to determine what combination of marsh grass (Spartina alterniflora, smooth cordgrass) replanting tactics produces the best outcome for a marine diesel fuel oiled marsh in a controlled setting. The study consisted of 20 oiled mesocosms (approximately 450 L tanks with simulated tidal flux) with four treatments (control mesocosms with no oil and no replanting, oiled mesocosms with no replanting, oiled mesocosms replanted with local field transplants, and oiled mesocosms replanted with nursery stock) with 5 replicates each. Replanting tactics tested also included containerized/plug plantings vs. bare-root plantings. The oiled and dead vegetation was cut and removed from the mesocosms that later received replanted S. alterniflora. Marsh replanting success was followed over 9 months. Data presented include oil effects on the original marsh prior to replanting, hydrocarbon residues in water and sediments over time, and measurements of the structure and growth of the replanted grasses (stem density, shoot height, above-ground biomass, and below-ground biomass). An initial replanting effort was attempted 2 months after the oiling event. All the replanted S. alterniflora from the initial replanting event died, likely due to residual diesel that remained in the mesocosms and was still toxic. A successful replanting effort occurred 8 months after the oiling event and preliminary results indicate that plugs containing plants with sediment performed well and similarly between local field transplants and nursery-grown material, especially considering aboveground biomass at 9 months post-planting, although values were still well below reference conditions. Bare root nursery material failed overall, and bare root field transplants had intermediate results. Oiled marsh that was not replanted showed no aboveground recovery. This data will help inform future restoration efforts that are considering using replanting as a tactic for restoring an oil-contaminated saltmarsh. Here, we investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of leatherback turtles sampled from five nesting sites in Sumatra, Indonesia. Using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences from 57 individuals, we identified eight haplotypes, including one novel variant, with Sumatra exhibiting the highest haplotype (h = 0.786) and nucleotide diversity (π = 0.0040) among regional rookeries. There was a lack of significant stock structure based on our haplotype frequency data among rookeries in Sumatra (p>0.05). Phylogenetic and haplotype network analyses revealed that Sumatra contains lineages from both Indian and West Pacific Ocean clades, suggesting its role as a genetic bridge between these populations. Our results on population genetic structure support the recognition of Sumatra as a distinct Management Unit (MU), separate from other Northeast Indian Ocean populations. Our findings highlight the need to refine existing RMU boundaries and prioritize conservation actions in Sumatra to preserve its unique genetic composition and enhance connectivity across the Indo-Pacific. Observations show profound vertical gradients in O3 concentration beneath forest canopies; however, most chemical transport models (CTMs) used in the operational and research community, such as the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model, cannot account for such effects due to inadequate canopy representation and lack of sub-canopy processes. To address this knowledge gap, we implemented detailed forest canopy processes – including in-canopy photolysis attenuation and turbulence – into the CMAQv5.3.1 model, driven by the Global Forecast System and enhanced with high-resolution vegetation datasets. Simulations were conducted for August 2019 over the contiguous US. The canopy-aware model shows substantial improvement, with mean O3 bias reduced from +0.70 ppb (Base) to −0.10 ppb (Canopy), and fractional bias from +9.71 % to +6.37 %. Monthly mean O3 in the lowest model layer (∼ 0–40 m) decreased by up to 9 ppb in dense forests, especially in the East. Process analysis reveals a 75.2 % drop in first-layer O3 chemical production, with daily surface production declining from 673 to 167 ppb d−1, driven by suppressed photolysis and vertical mixing. This enhances NOx titration and reduces O3 formation under darker, stable conditions. The results highlight the critical role of canopy processes in atmospheric chemistry and demonstrate the importance of incorporating realistic vegetation-atmosphere interactions in CTMs to improve air quality forecasts and health-relevant exposure assessments. Well-coordinated, co-developed deployments along with meaningful and early engagement between the mCDR and fisheries, aquaculture, and Indigenous communities can maximize opportunities to avert zero-sum trade-offs and increase the potential for mutually beneficial synergies between the various groups. Limited engagement with fisheries, aquaculture, and Indigenous communities may enhance the likelihood of community opposition, misinformation, potential ecosystem harm, and/or difficulty in weighing cost-benefits of mCDR approaches. At this early stage of research and development, mCDR initiatives can learn from other sectors and existing networks about best practices for engagement; however, this effort requires prioritization of intentional conversations. This perspective paper offers a brief overview of mCDR overlaps with fisheries and aquaculture, followed by insights about the current state of mCDR engagement with fisheries, aquaculture, and Indigenous communities. From our perspective as an interdisciplinary co-authorship team including members from academic and government sciences, Indigenous communities, and commercial fishing communities, we offer the following high-level recommendations for engagement across mCDR and fisheries, aquaculture, and Indigenous communities that are based on lessons learned in other sectors and research areas: synthesize and expand current state of knowledge; conduct early and meaningful engagement; leverage existing networks; establish strong interdisciplinary collaboration; co-design projects with communities; and develop frameworks and best practice guides. However, research and regulatory environments have not kept pace with its growth, leading to challenges to expanding the industry, and in many cases, these developments may be ahead of available peer-reviewed literature, resulting in a dearth of information from industry participants about their needs and perspectives. The results of the first survey of industry members and those adjacent to the US domestic seaweed aquaculture industry are presented. Presenting contributions of participants throughout the supply chain from seaweed seed string producers through to processors and culinary professionals, and including regulators and researchers. A total of 268 respondents responded to the needs assessment survey, with engagement from fourteen states, primarily representing the U.S. northeast and west coasts. Results describe a wide differential in levels of industry engagement and development across states with Maine providing an example of a well-developed industry, and others just beginning to develop seaweed growing permits and infrastructure. Respondents were asked to identify challenges which were then categorized as: (1) production systems (32%); (2) market opportunities, including both supply and demand (26%); (3) regulations (26%); and (4) post-harvest opportunities and infrastructure (i.e., processing facilities) (16%). Considering these challenges collectively, a holistic approach to scaling up the industry is needed to address challenges throughout the supply chain and across states. The paper concludes with recommendations for policy makers, regulators, extension professionals and researchers to assist this nascent industry in scaling up domestically by working to facilitate information transfer across states and roles within the industry to increase capacity at various levels of the supply chain, address remaining scientific questions, and move toward a regulatory framework for an inter-state (or domestic) industry. AB - The marine snail Lacuna vincta is a generalist mesograzer that is fouling kelp farms in the northern Atlantic. Often found on the blades of naturally occuring kelp, L. vincta’s larval dispersal and ability to migrate post-metamorphosis allow it to encounter and settle upon cultivated kelp blades located in the upper water column. Once settled, L. vincta graze and lay eggs on kelp, causing losses in profit for some farmers and kelp processors when eggs are too costly or difficult to remove. The patchy distribution of L. vincta within and between kelp farms led us to test snail preferences between 1) “healthy” (nutrient-enhanced) and “stressed” (unenhanced) farmed Saccharina latissima (sugar kelp) and between 2) farmed S. latissima and Saccharina angustissima (skinny kelp). We measured grazed area and number of snails residing on kelp between treatments and compared grazing between large and small size classes, though snail size was not tested statistically. Trial 1 in the first experiment and trials 1 and 2 in the second showed significant differences in grazing area while others did not, however there were more snails of the large size class found on both the nutrient-enhanced kelp in the first experiment and on the S. angustissima in the second. We also found a strong relationship between the amount of L. vincta snails present and the amount of kelp area grazed in both experiments. These results suggest that herbivory preference due to the differences in nutritive content and between S. lastissima and S. angustissima work alongside many other factors that attract L. vincta to some kelp blades and not others. This study contributes to best management practices for farmers when designing kelp farms and choosing which species to cultivate. This makes long‐range AR forecasts, specifically at subseasonal timescales, a valuable tool for both water resource and emergency management personnel. Ensemble forecasts of the system for high‐resolution prediction on Earth‐to‐Local Domains (SHiELD) model, configured with a CONUS nested grid, are evaluated for prediction skill relating to both weekly landfalling AR activity and AR‐related precipitation. Results indicate that SHiELD exhibits skillful prediction of landfalling AR activity and extreme daily AR‐related precipitation through week 2 with some skill even extending into week 3. Inspired by divergent outcomes regarding SHiELD's ability to predict two high‐impact ARs, successful week 2 forecasts of landfalling AR activity in SHiELD are found to be dependent, at least in part, on how favorably the large‐scale environment is preconditioned to the development and/or maintenance of AR activity during the preceding week. Our findings suggest SHiELD can skillfully predict AR activity and its related extreme precipitation at leads of 2–3 weeks, providing stakeholders ample time to monitor areas at risk for widespread flooding while also preparing them for potential impacts. Lastly, SHiELD is shown to under‐predict the frequency of AR activity over the southern half of the western US due to systematic mean state integrated vapor transport biases, a finding that highlights an avenue for further advancement of landfalling AR predictability in SHiELD. Here we show that the 2023 heat wave event was linked to a strong anticyclonic blocking pattern that persisted for more than six weeks across the western US. Regression analysis and atmospheric model simulations suggest that the anticyclonic pattern was ultimately forced by the extremely warm sea surface temperature in the Atlantic. The combination of a warm Atlantic and a developing Pacific El Niño significantly amplified regional heat waves, doubling their number, tripling their days, and increasing their duration by about 50%. Mitigating anthropogenic impacts on these habitats requires tools to quantify their ecological value and the debits and credits of impact and mitigation. To summarize and clarify the state of SAV habitat quantification and available tools, we searched peer‐reviewed literature and other agency documents for methods that either assigned ecological value to or calculated equivalencies between impact and mitigation in SAV. Out of 47 tools, there were 11 equivalency methods, 7 of which included a valuation component. The remaining valuation methods were most commonly designed for seagrasses and rocky intertidal macroalgae rather than canopy‐forming kelps. Tools were often designed to address specific resource policies and associated habitat evaluation. Frequent categories of tools and methods included those associated with habitat equivalency analyses and those that scored habitats relative to reference or ideal conditions, including models designed for habitat suitability indices and the European Union's Water and Marine Framework Directives. Over 29 tool input metrics spanned 3 spatial scales of SAV: individual shoots or stipes, bed or site, and landscape or region. The most common metric used for both seagrasses and macroalgae was cover. Seagrass tools also often employed density measures, and some categories used measures of tissue content (e.g., carbon, nitrogen). Macroalgal tools for rocky intertidal habitats frequently included species richness or incorporated indicator species to assess habitat. Here, we employ “genomic tagging” and relatedness analyses from a genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset obtained from 88 leopard seal tissue samples to investigate patterns of seasonal haul out site fidelity and social structure at Cape Shirreff, a leopard seal hotspot during austral summers. Although many seals were observed only once, some females had remarkably high site fidelity returning to the same location across timeframes of up to eight years. Most leopard seals were unrelated, but we identified a trio of closely related females, including a mother-daughter pair, indicating that seasonal site fidelity can span generations. Interestingly, the mother leopard seal identified through our relatedness analyses is a foraging specialist that targets Antarctic fur seal pups; her diet changed very little over the past decade. Our findings suggest high individual variability in leopard seal behavior regarding site fidelity and social structure. Such flexibility may play a key role in this species’ responses to environmental change. We trained traditional SDMs and iSDMs using three data types for the blue shark (Prionace glauca) in the North Atlantic: fishery-dependent marker tags, observer records, and fishery-independent electronic tags. We compared pooled and ensembled SDMs, built with boosted regression trees, to an iSDM explicitly designed to address data-specific biases while leveraging each dataset’s strengths. While all approaches produced robust models, performance varied among data types, with fishery-dependent data consistently yielding more accurate than fishery-independent data. Differences in performance stemmed from models’ abilities to capture spatiotemporal dynamics in training data. iSDMs accounting for seasonal variability yielded the most accurate estimates but were computationally intensive, emphasizing the need to align model purpose with integration methods. Our findings reveal key trade-offs in data integration methods, particularly in balancing predictive accuracy and feasibility. As diverse data sources grow, leveraging robust approaches will be vital for improving conservation and management strategies and understanding dynamic species distributions in a changing ocean. To inform management and conservation decision-making, we applied a climate vulnerability assessment (CVA) using expert elicitation to provide a qualitative assessment of vulnerability, exposure, and sensitivity to climate change of 49 sea turtle management units (i.e., Regional Management Units and Distinct Population Segments). Eighteen sea turtle experts scored climate exposure (projected changes in climate and ocean conditions within the current population distribution compared with historical conditions) and climate sensitivity (using life history traits as proxies). Results indicate that all management units have either very high (88% of units) or high (12% of units) exposure to climate change, with the most influential factors across all regions being temperature, ocean acidification, dissolved oxygen, and sea level rise. Forty-three percent of the management units have very high sensitivity to climate change, 49% have high sensitivity, and 8% moderate sensitivity. Key factors for sensitivity included nest/egg sensitivity to temperature, in-water habitat specificity, abundance, and trend in population abundance, although primary drivers varied by species and region. The resulting climate vulnerability score was very high for 88% of the management units, high for 10%, and moderate for 2%. This assessment quantified the vulnerability of individual sea turtle management units to climate change, identified data gaps to help guide research, and established a baseline for comparison with future sea turtle assessment efforts.
