Description:The Pennsylvania Fish Commission, now Fish and Boat Commission, was created in 1866 for the specific purpose of restoring American shad to the Susquehanna River. Renewed efforts to restore anadromous fish to the Susquehanna River began in the 1960's and are presently conducted under the auspices of the Susquehanna River Anadromous Fish Restoration Committee (SRAFRC). SRAFRC membership, in 1995, includes the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Susquehanna River Basin Commission, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Marine Fisheries Service. The goal of the restoration is to produce a self-sustaining population of 2 million adult shad and 12 million herring.
