We conducted simulation-estimation experiments to evaluate the effects of bias correction for log-normal random variables and observations. We found that applying bias correction on observations had minimal impact on estimated population quantities, whereas applying bias correction on the process had a significant effect, because estimation error in variance parameters created bias in population estimates. Specifically, when both recruitment deviations and numbers-at-age transitions were treated as random effects, substantial bias in estimated annual recruitments and SSB was found when bias correction was excluded in the operating model but applied in the estimation model. In contrast, not using bias correction had limited negative effects. Thus, we recommend avoiding bias correction for log-normal random variables in state-space models, especially when multiple random-effects processes are modeled simultaneously. One-step-ahead (OSA) residuals have been proposed as a replacement for the commonly used (but incorrectly interpreted) Pearson residuals; however, there is no clear best practice for diagnosing model fit when using OSA residuals. We use a simple example to illustrate common sources of model-misspecification and impacts on statistical and visual diagnostics. We find that visual inspection of model fit aggregated across all observations reliably identifies many types of misspecifications, visual inspection of Pearson residuals can reveal further lack of fit, and statistical analysis of OSA residuals provides for objective evaluation of both lack-of-fit and overall data weighting. The power to detect model misspecification depends on the sample size, the number of age bins, and the number of years of data. By illustrating common problems when the correct answer is known, this work provides a guideline for model diagnostics using OSA residuals in more complex settings. This study analyzed the adult population from PBF landings in Taiwan from 2010 to 2023 to inform fisheries management. We found a strong correlation between declining juvenile catches in Japanese troll or purse seine fishery and increasing adult catches in Taiwanese and Japanese longline fishery, with a 7–9 year lag. Age estimation, using otolith annuli and age-length keys, revealed a temporal shift in age composition. Despite the substantial increase in Taiwanese catch size, the average age of landed PBF decreased. The spawning stock, previously dominated by older individuals (14–18 years), now primarily consisted of younger fish (8–12 years). Prior to 2014, most PBF measured between 220 and 240 cm in fork length; after 2017, this range generally decreased to 200–220 cm. Permutation test using fish size and otolith direct ageing data suggested a lower mean fork length at age for the PBF landed in the recent years compared to earlier years. Furthermore, a linear mixed model showed a relationship between fork length and fishing year, indicating a consistent decrease in fork length across all age groups. These results suggest that reduced fishing pressure on juvenile PBF (0–1 years old) has allowed more individuals to reach adulthood, contributing to the observed recovery of the spawning population. These findings provide valuable insights into the effective fishery management and PBF stock rebuilding in Taiwan and other regions. Spatially-explicit multi-stock, age-structured stock assessment models have not been evaluated to understand how the accuracy of model estimates is affected by different assumptions of stock structure, age composition, and movement, compared to current methods used to inform management decisions. Our objective was to evaluate the accuracy of spatially-explicit multi-stock and spatially-implicit single stock assessment models for striped bass under alternative scenarios of data availability and quality. We conducted a simulation study to evaluate the accuracy of spatial assessment models under alternative scenarios of data quality and appropriateness of assumptions including investigating the effect of ageing error on model accuracy. A range of estimation models with alternative assumptions about spatial dynamics, stock composition, and ageing error were fitted to the datasets. Spatially-explicit estimates were approximately unbiased in estimating abundance and fishing mortality when they closely matched the assumptions of the data generating model and accounted for ageing error. Data to inform stock composition or informative priors on occupancy probabilities were necessary for the spatially-explicit models, but estimates were sensitive to correct specification of the occupancy probability priors. Models that ignored potential ageing error in datasets resulted in biased and inaccurate estimates of abundance and fishing mortality. All models provided inaccurate estimates of reference points, although estimates from spatially-explicit models were the least biased. Spatially-explicit stock assessments can potentially improve accuracy of estimates when they match spatial dynamics of fish populations and when ageing error was corrected. We show that abundance declines during the collapse were associated with dramatic declines in energetic condition, and the negative impact of high population density on energetic reserves was intensified by warming during a marine heatwave. Elevated energetic condition coincided with strong recruitment post-collapse, suggesting rapid initial population recovery in the eastern Bering Sea. However, we show that cold-water habitat (≤0 °C) is critical for supporting high snow crab density in rebuilding towards a pre-collapse state. These results suggest that warming and loss of sea ice will exacerbate the risk of collapse in snow crab through energetic constraints on survival. Furthermore, we highlight the validation of an indirect energetic condition metric that will facilitate continued energetics monitoring and rapid integration into management. Current management may not ensure long-term economic stability nor maintain the age structure diversity necessary for population resilience. Using a management strategy evaluation (MSE) framework, we assessed alternative management strategies under random, regime-like, and recruitment-failure scenarios. Strategies that substantially reduced fishing mortality improved stock size and age diversity. Catch stability constraint strategies provided minimal long-term benefits and increased risk during recruitment collapses, although they slightly accelerated population recovery times. Harvest caps maintained higher population sizes, promoted moderate, consistent catches, and modestly expanded population age structure. However, no strategy prevented population declines under prolonged recruitment failure. Results underscore the importance of refining harvest control rules to better balance catch and population stability. Heteropod collections from two midwater sampling programs conducted after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWHOS): the Offshore Nekton Sampling and Analysis Program (ONSAP) in 2011 and the Deep Pelagic Nekton Dynamics of the Gulf of Mexico (DEEPEND) in 2015-2018 were used for this study These programs collected over 3,495 heteropods in the two target families from 46 sampling stations in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The zone along the northeastern GOM continental slope had the greatest species richness and abundances. The family Pterotracheidae (Pterotrachea coronata (Forsskal 1775), Pterotrachea hippocampus(Philippi 1836) and Pterotrachea scutata (Gegenbaur 1855) was the most abundant and contained the largest specimens examined. Common carinariids included Carinaria lamarcki (Péron & Lesuer 1810) and Cardiapoda placenta (Lesson 1830). We found evidence of diel migration in P. coronata and P. scutata but not for C. lamarcki, C. placenta or P. hippocampus. We evaluated body and eye size at capture depth for each species. There was no evidence of eye size increasing relative to body size with depth among the five species and relative eye size is species-specific. However, it was observed that vertical migrators had a different eye-type than the non-migrators. We determined that pterotracheids have smaller eyes relative to their total body size than carinariids. The allometric pattern of eye growth differed in P. scutata from those of the other species which could indicate that a factor other than depth plays a part in heteropod eye development. This is the first comprehensive study of large heteropods in the northern GOM which provides an important baseline for continued study of this pelagic gastropod. GTDs operate by measuring the barometric pressure of a small sample volume of air separated from the water by a gas-permeable membrane resting on a rigid permeable support. Existing GTDs use a compressible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane which exhibit several undesirable features: the membrane collapses with increasing hydrostatic pressure, which reduces the permeability; a collapsed membrane increases the response; collapse and expansion generate large transient signals [McNeil et al. 2006a]. Also, reverse osmosis becomes a problem at depths greater than approximately 330 m in seawater. We present a new GTD that solves the hydrostatic pressure-generated transients and changing response times, and alleviates reverse-osmosis. These improvements allow the new GTD to be used in the mesopelagic zone. The new GTD uses a custom designed small diameter (4 cm) thin (130 µm) incompressible composite Teflon-AF 2400 membrane. It can operate to a depth of at least 1000 m with a depth-independent response time of approximately 35 min. We estimated the hydrostatic pressure dependence of Henry's Law solubilities as we characterized the new Teflon-membrane GTD using data collected in the laboratory. Field testing occurred on two APL/UW Gas-Profiling Floats deployed in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) for 15 days during May 2014. The floats profiled between the surface and 400 m depth, sampling gas tension within the Oxygen Deficient Zone. The gas tension-profiles from the two GTDs were validated against gas tension derived from independent N2:Ar and Ar concentrations measured by mass spectrometry, agreeing to within ± 0.6% and ± 0.4%. As a result, the global land surface albedo dynamics over recent decades and their corresponding radiative forcing to the climate system remain poorly understood4,5,6,7,8,9. Here we quantify the individual and combined effects of snow cover dynamics, LULC conversions and non-conversion regions on albedo variations during 2001–2020 and estimate their induced radiative forcing. We show that the negative radiative forcing induced by the global land surface albedo change was −0.142 (−0.158, −0.114) W m−2 over the past two decades. The global snow-free land surface albedo increased by 2.2% (P < 0.001), with a negative radiative forcing of −0.164 (−0.186, −0.138) W m−2 (P < 0.001). The magnitude of this negative forcing is sevenfold larger than the positive forcing induced by snow dynamics, and equivalent to 59.9% of that caused by CO2 emissions from 2011 to 201910. The global radiative forcing due to albedo changes in LULC non-conversion regions is 3.9 to 8.1 times greater than that from LULC conversions. The radiative forcing induced by albedo changes highlights the important role of land surface dynamics in modulating global warming. Here, we develop an age-structured SDM framework using data from the west coast of the USA and concentrate on two species with distinct life histories: North Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) and sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria). We validate our approach by forecasting age classes across survey locations in future years; these results highlight that forecast models have predictive skill (sablefish more so than hake) and that the predictive ability is highest for older age classes. Using predictions of age-1 sablefish as an example, we demonstrate how our models may be used to forecast future bycatch risk in space, helping increase the efficiency of fisheries. Our framework is applicable to a wide range of survey types and platforms around the world and supports the development of spatially explicit management strategies and optimal allocation of fishing effort. These big data provide unprecedented opportunities to study underwater soundscapes but also enormous challenges to efficiently extract information. To address these challenges, the Sound Cooperative (SoundCoop) project built community-focused cyberinfrastructure to promote improved, scalable and sustainable processing and access of marine PAM data for management, science, industry and military applications. Driven by cross-institutional participation representing a diversity of data collection methods and conditions, SoundCoop established guidance for standardized processing of ocean sound level metrics using freeware software toolkits and developed core tools and processes that support open science. Four comparative analyses that connect PAM monitoring efforts and integrate non-acoustic data illustrate how interoperable sound level metrics support a more coherent and synoptic perspective on ocean soundscapes using methods that current and future PAM projects can leverage. Such a framework around PAM big data offers the opportunity to revolutionize large-scale marine ecology and oceanography in similar ways to other transformative approaches for understanding environmental patterns and processes at global scales. Yet, it is clear that some locations, such as Florida’s reefs, and potentially other locations, are not well explained by this paradigm. Here, we suggest that the proliferation and increased dominance of long-sediment-laden algal turfs (LSATs) create an additional negative feedback process that helps explain the compromised resilience of Florida’s reefs and further extends the existing Western Atlantic model. Collectively, coral mortality, reef flattening, and intense grazing appear to have created a series of negative feedback processes that reinforce a flat, sediment-laden benthos that impedes the recovery of already diminished coral populations. Importantly, feedbacks associated with LSATs could be strengthened in the presence of high herbivore biomass, thereby undermining foundational expectations of resilience based on grazing pressure alone. Here, we outline this destructive cycle and provide support for the mechanisms that drive these feedbacks. Although we focus on the ecological context of Florida’s reefs, our expansion of the conceptual framework will likely apply to other reef systems in the Caribbean with similar ecological attributes. Previous studies have established a strong connection between MCS initiation over the BoB and diurnal gravity waves propagating from India. However, the precise role these waves play in triggering offshore MCSs remains unquantified. In this study, we analyze a typical MCS event, representative of the climatological spatiotemporal characteristics of MCS initiation in the region, to investigate the relative roles of diurnal gravity waves and other mesoscale processes in offshore MCS initiation. An ensemble-based satellite data assimilation (DA) experiment is conducted, assimilating all-sky infrared radiances from Meteosat-8 into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. The ensemble forecast, initialized from DA analyses, shows that many ensemble members accurately capture both the timing and location of MCS initiation. The analysis of the “successful” members reveals diurnal gravity waves play a significant role in enhancing lower-tropospheric moisture and destabilizing the offshore environment. Surprisingly, similar gravity waves and destabilization are also present in members that failed to capture MCS initiation. Further analysis indicates that land-breeze front from northern Sri Lanka is a key factor distinguishing successful from “unsuccessful” members, which, in successful members, is strong enough to lift air above the level of free convection (LFC) and lead to MCS initiation. Accurately simulating the land-breeze front depends on the correct representation of pre-MCS clouds and surface winds. This suggests that while diurnal gravity waves contribute to environmental destabilization, surface and boundary layer processes are crucial for the practical predictability of offshore MCS initiation. In this study, we combined long term monitoring and acoustic telemetry data to characterize the density and behavior of lionfish on mesophotic reefs in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI). Across 10 years of monitoring, significantly higher densities of lionfish were observed on mesophotic reefs as compared to nearshore and offshore reefs in the USVI. We tagged lionfish at two mesophotic reef sites in the territory and found that most of them were resident to the mesophotic areas and had comparable home range sizes to those reported on adjacent shallow coral reefs. We found that a majority of fish displayed crepuscular diel activity patterns, but some individuals had unusually high activity during daytime periods as compared to previous studies of the species. There was variability within the crepuscular activity pattern, with some individuals being more active in the morning and others in the evening crepuscular periods. The persistence of lionfish in mesophotic reef habitats in the USVI suggests that they could be impacting these environments, and future studies and management efforts should focus on identifying, quantifying, and mitigating those effects.
