Despite design improvements and a heightened focus on limiting burden on participants prior to the most recent survey effort, the 2022 Cost Survey yielded a lower-than-anticipated response rate of 14.8%. When nonresponse is systematic, the data collected may not accurately reflect the full range of economic conditions across fishing fleets, making nonresponse an important area to investigate and mitigate. A nonresponse postcard was distributed for the first time in the Cost Survey's history to investigate the following research objectives: understand survey nonresponders' motivations for choosing not to participate in the effort, explain the dynamic between harvesters and managers using qualitative analysis, and identify actions that can be used to enhance voluntary research participation and relationships among all stakeholders. The results indicate that distrust of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries was the primary reason for nonresponse. Qualitative analysis of open-ended comments identified recurring themes, including concerns about the use of sensitive financial information and an overall dissatisfaction with NOAA Fisheries in the region due to perceptions of overregulation and misaligned management priorities. This research can be used as a case study for both identifying and analysing participation barriers to fisheries data collection and provides diagnostic indicators of broader management challenges. The importance of qualitative analysis is showcased to bridge knowledge gaps between stakeholders and managers in a natural resource context. Approaches are suggested for improving survey engagement, strengthening stakeholder trust and ultimately enhancing the quality of economic data available for cost-based policy decisions. Bacterial probiotic candidates were selected using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, wherein zones of inhibition suggest competitive exclusion of a pathogen by a probiotic candidate. Challenge studies reported previously indicated that addition of one probiotic candidate, isolate OY15 (Vibrio alginolyticus) [Miyamoto et al. 1961, Sakazaki 1968 (AL)] to oyster larvae challenged with a known shellfish-larval pathogen B183 (Vibrio coralliilyticus) (Ben-Haim et al.), significantly improved larval survival (P < 0.0141) compared with the pathogen alone. Mechanisms responsible for this effect were investigated with an in vitro study to determine the effects of probiotic strain OY15, or the pathogenic strain B183, upon oyster hemocytes and their immune functions. This study provides strong evidence that probiotic candidate OY15 stimulates oyster hemocyte immune functionality. In contrast, pathogen B183 caused immune suppression of hemocyte immune functions and significantly higher mortality of these cells. Based upon these results using hemocytes removed from adult oysters, upregulation of larval hemocyte immune activity is at least partially responsible for improved survival of larvae challenged with the pathogen B183. This study quantified soil carbon stocks in two mangrove systems in Puerto Rico—La Parguera and Laguna Grande—and evaluated the relative influence of hydrology, sediment deposition, and climate on carbon accumulation. Depth-standardized soil carbon stocks (0–50 cm) were higher at Laguna Grande (166 ± 66 Mg C ha−1) than at La Parguera (115 ± 68 Mg C ha−1), with a marginal difference (p < 0.10). Differences between sites are consistent with contrasting hydrological regimes: La Parguera experiences greater tidal flushing, which may enhance organic matter export and decomposition, whereas Laguna Grande is a semi-enclosed lagoon with restricted tidal exchange and higher standing biomass, conditions that may promote organic matter retention and carbon accumulation. Although regional climatic differences—higher temperatures and precipitation near Laguna Grande relative to La Parguera—may influence productivity and decomposition dynamics, hydrological setting and sediment retention appear to be primary controls on soil carbon storage. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating hydrological processes and geomorphic context into blue carbon assessments and mangrove conservation strategies. Understanding how tidal exchange, sediment dynamics, and precipitation patterns interact is critical for predicting mangrove carbon responses to future climate change. This data paper presents the WFIP3 event log, a curated record of 578 d of meteorological phenomena and field observations that complements the campaign's extensive high-frequency datasets. The event log provides both manually documented daily weather discussions and automatically derived indicators of atmospheric processes – including low-level jets, wind ramps, extreme wind veer, and weak wind conditions – based on observations from scanning lidars deployed at three coastal and offshore sites. The dataset offers structured metadata, standardized time and site identifiers, and consistent terminology to facilitate its integration with WFIP3's observational and modeling data products. The log supports diverse applications, from model evaluation and forecast verification to the selection of case studies on offshore boundary-layer dynamics. The WFIP3 event log is publicly available through the US Department of Energy's Wind Data Hub, providing the research community with a transparent and enduring contextual reference for the interpretation and use of WFIP3 measurements. In this study, we quantified the interannual variations in scallop growth rate and thermal stress intensity in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) from 2000 to 2018. The results showed that the scallop growth rate variations were overall synchronized between the shallow (< 60 m) and deep (≥ 60 m) MAB prior to 2015. The response of growth rate to warming in 2015 and 2016 showed marked spatial heterogeneity: scallops in the shallow subregions grew more slowly in the warm years, whereas higher temperature contributed to elevated growth rates in the deep subregions. We developed a dynamic energy budget model to explain the distinct growth rate response to warming at different depths. The model results showed that, in 2016, bottom temperatures in the shallow subregions exceeded the optimal range, limiting the energy available for growth. In contrast, warming created more favorable thermal conditions in the deep habitats. This work reveals the spatiotemporal patterns of scallop growth rates in the MAB and contributes to a quantitative understanding of thermal stress, supporting the development of science-based management strategies under future warming. However, reproductive traits and seasonality remain poorly characterized for many species, largely due to difficulties in obtaining specimens. In this comparative histological study we describe the reproductive tissues (gonads) of males and females at multiple maturity stages across 15 cubozoan species, representing two orders, seven families, and eight genera. We document several reproductive traits: (1) variation in oocyte shape, including polygonal oocytes; (2) unidentified cytoplasmic inclusions within oocytes suggestive of undescribed component of vitellogenesis; (3) swollen gonadal structures in mature males, hinting at an uncharacterized spawning mechanism; and (4) a diverse repertoire of nematocysts within gonadal tissues, including putative nematoblasts in species of both cubozoan orders, indicating distinct developmental pathways for these organelles. Ancestral state reconstruction of three reproductive characters, viz. oocytes with unidentified cytoplasmic inclusions, the presence of nematocysts in gonads, and fertilization mode, suggests that all but the latter likely evolved independently within Cubozoa. By uncovering and characterizing these novel sexual traits in cubozoan jellyfishes, this study provides fundamental baseline data for comparative analyses aimed at elucidating the diversity and evolution of reproductive strategies across medusozoan taxa and their roles in spawning aggregations, also known as jellyfish blooms. We assembled an international working group of > 30 contributors, including fishing industry participants, managers, non-governmental ocean conservation organization representatives, and scientists to synthesize obstacles to bottom-tow fisheries sustainability and to develop expert-based recommendations to operationalize sustainability advancements moving forward. We identified 30 key gaps impeding bottom-towed fisheries sustainability spanning 6 core challenge areas including: seafloor disturbance, bycatch and discards, management design and implementation, fishing operations, cross-sector conflicts, and public perception and communication. We generated 28 priority recommendations to address bottom-tow fisheries sustainability obstacles with themes including: addressing data gaps, advancing mechanistic understanding and modelling tools, strengthening management processes, and improving knowledge sharing and communication. Cross-disciplinary and diverse system experience among fisheries and marine ecosystem stakeholders will be critical for operationalizing bottom-tow fisheries sustainability advancements. As the global human population approaches 10 bn in the next 30 years, ensuring sustainable wild capture fisheries is an imperative for feeding the world. Outputs from this synthesis serve as a resource for fishing and marine ecosystem stakeholders to identify key challenge areas and associated entry points for solutions-oriented efforts to improve the sustainability of bottom-tow fisheries. Here, we study current and future changes in the infrared spectrum using 22 years of observations from the NASA AIRS instrument and 40 years of AIRS‐like observations simulated in an Earth System Model. Currently detectable changes are dominated by forcing and surface warming. Conversely, trends in spectral channels where and water vapor forcing respectively oppose forced stratospheric and tropospheric temperature responses are indistinguishable from observed internal variability. By the early 2040s, however, mid‐latitude stratospheric cooling and tropospheric warming outcompete greenhouse gas forcing to produce significant trends of opposing signs. Detecting these trends requires that the total uncertainty of a multi‐instrument, intercalibrated record is below 0.02 K/yr. Three decades later in 2006, the humpback whale population in the North Pacific Ocean had increased from approximately 1200–1400 (Johnson and Wolman 1984) to at least 21,000 individuals (Barlow et al. 2011) and continued increasing to over 30,000 individuals by 2013 (Cheeseman et al. 2024). In 2016, the National Marine Fisheries Service of the United States (NMFS) reassessed the listing of humpback whales under the Endangered Species Act. Worldwide, 14 distinct population segments (DPS) were identified, with four inhabiting the North Pacific. The Hawai'i DPS, that includes approximately 89% of the individuals that migrate to the Gulf of Alaska (Wade 2021), was delisted from the Endangered Species Act, the Mexico DPS was listed as threatened, while the Western North Pacific and Central American DPSs remained classified as endangered (Federal Register 2016). Previous prioritization efforts have focused on contaminants in sediment, water, and passive samplers, which may not be representative of compounds that bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms. Consequently, this study adopted a stepwise method to prioritize chemicals of potential concern detected in dreissenid mussels from samples collected across the Great Lakes from 2009–2018. The stepwise method considered environmental fate, detection frequency, and exceedance of toxicity quotients based on ecotoxicological effect concentrations. Overall, 153 compounds out of 267 analyzed were detected in dreissenid mussels, 47 of which had water quality effect concentrations, 56 had apical effect concentrations (Tier 1 ECOTOX or apical screening), 17 had nonapical effect concentrations (Tier 2 ECOTOX, Cytotoxic Burst, and ToxCast) and 33 had estimated effect concentrations (quantitative structure-activity relationship, estimated screening, and pharmacological potency). Of the compounds with water quality effect concentrations, nine were designated as high priority, including the herbicide atrazine and five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that were previously identified as potentially hazardous within other matrices. Similar contaminants were identified as high priority in a related study of native unionid mussels in the Great Lakes. A total of 27 compounds were low priority, suggesting that these contaminants do not warrant further action based on this dataset. Overall, these findings will facilitate the development of management strategies to mitigate the effects of contaminants on aquatic organisms within the Great Lakes. We mapped 31 ciénegas with high-resolution imagery and analyzed Landsat data (1985–2023) to assess vegetation health and moisture using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII). Results show substantial interannual variability in phenology, water stress, and soil moisture, with regional drying and elevation strongly influencing ciénega resilience. We classified ciénegas into three functional states—healthy, desiccated, and dormant—and mapped their 2023 condition. Trend analyses indicate most ciénegas exhibit greening despite drought, though localized variability underscores the need for site-specific management. None are in a stable climax (reference) state; rather, they transition among states in response to external drivers. Increasing woody plant cover and surface drying, likely linked to declining regional water tables, favor deep-rooted species over wetland grasses—a pattern mirrored in adjacent control plots. Spatially explicit analysis revealed intra-ciénega variability often masked by aggregated data, highlighting the importance of high-resolution monitoring. Seasonal and long-term trends provide context for understanding ciénega dynamics, including degradation and restoration pathways. This study emphasizes the importance of groundwater conservation and demonstrates how remote sensing supports long-term monitoring. In order to interpret these data, tools are needed that account for the uncertainty associated with eDNA sampling, sequencing and analysis. The data resulting from eDNA marker gene analysis differ from many traditional methods of biodiversity surveys because they are highly complex, sparse and compositional. Methodological biases produce uncertainty at every step of the sampling and sequencing process. Thus, it is critical that users have a way of interpreting eDNA results that accounts for their compositional nature and models the uncertainty resulting from factors like patchy sampling, PCR amplification biases and variable sequencing depth. Here, we introduce MAMBO: Metabarcoding Analysis using Modeled Bayesian Occurrences. MAMBO simulates in silico replication and models the uncertainty surrounding the sequencing and analysis process. Further, it uses these modelled sequence count data to correlate two sets of marker genes with a Bayesian regression, facilitating the linkage of different groups targeted by these assays. Compared with correlational network analyses, MAMBO overcomes many of the limitations to robust statistical analyses of eDNA marker gene data and provides an opportunity for new insight into ecological patterns over space and time. Therefore, collaboration and communication between the NWS and its stakeholders are vitally important to ensure consistency with road hazard messages. This study aims to obtain insight into the relationships between Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) and their transportation partners with regard to how road hazard information is passed between these entities. An NWS-wide survey was conducted during winter 2023/24, which collected both qualitative and quantitative data. Analysis of survey data reveals that forecasters are in consensus over who they collaborate with, the communication channels used, the information they provide, and the importance and benefit of utilizing probabilistic guidance within road hazard messages to convey uncertainty. However, participant responses vary regarding strongly worded messages that imply road weather impacts, which suggests differing interpretations of the NWS directives. The level of collaboration WFOs have with DOTs is not consistent between respondents and appears to rely on the needs of the DOT office and their participation within the Pathfinder initiative. Additionally, forecasters appear to prefer probabilistic tools but anticipate interpretation difficulty and misunderstandings of probabilistic guidance by end users. Along with highlighting the current collaborative efforts between the NWS and its end users, the findings from this research will be utilized to inform future iterations of testbed evaluations to mitigate challenges during the development and testing of decision-support tools. Prior research has identified adaptive traits that, when present in a management system, can promote effective responses to these changes and minimise negative outcomes for fish and fishery systems. Understanding the extent to which managers identify these traits as important and actively influencing management can identify gaps and opportunities for putting this theory into practice. To address this, we surveyed 321 fishery management professionals and scientists across all eight U.S. fisheries management regions. Questions focused on 16 adaptive traits related to topics such as systemic flexibility, opportunities for knowledge exchange and agency to act. For each trait, at least 68% of respondents identified the trait as important for supporting adaptation in their region. The two traits relating to fishermen and management's ability to learn and innovate were the most widely identified as important for adaptation. However, when asked about the role of management in influencing these traits, positive perceptions dropped by about 20% (at most 44% agreement per trait). Perceived importance and influence of adaptive traits significantly varied by the education level of survey respondents, with higher education levels correlating with higher perceived trait importance. Mapping this mismatch between perceived importance of adaptive traits and the ability of management to address them provides a blueprint for areas where a shared understanding of climate-ready fishery goals would benefit both fishermen and regulators under future change. By incorporating these spatially varying inputs, the model overcomes previous limitations that relied on idealized scenarios. Using Austin, Texas, as a testbed metropolitan area, we assessed the realistic potential for cooling the city by reducing the 2 m air temperature (T2M) and universal thermal climate index (UTCI) through various HMS. Specifically, we evaluated cool roofs, green roofs, and solar photovoltaics under two scenarios: (i) complete roof area coverage and (ii) realistic implementation based on the available flat (non-pitched) roof area. Additionally, we implemented urban gardens and street trees and assessed their effectiveness in reducing T2M and UTCI. All experiments, including a control scenario without any HMS, were conducted during clear-sky days in August 2020, which was one of the hottest months recorded in Austin. The results indicate that while cool and green roofs are effective, their effectiveness is obfuscated in the city-wide mean T2M and UTCI reduction. Further, the realistic implementation of HMS had a negligible impact on city-wide mean T2M and UTCI. Nevertheless, these realistic rooftop simulations demonstrated potential for localized cooling in some areas of the city. Combining realistic rooftop-based HMS with urban gardens and street trees similarly resulted in limited city-wide cooling while yielding noticeable cooling in some grid cells. Street trees showed a large potential for locally reducing UTCI. These findings have direct implications for urban planning and heat mitigation approaches, as they highlight the need for evaluating HMS based on local (e.g. urban-block-scale) impacts using realistic implementation constraints, rather than emphasizing city-wide reductions in T2M or UTCI. In this study, we tested a recently developed method for gene knockdown in adult corals that utilizes short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and the RNA interference pathway. The Heat Shock Protein 16.2 (HSP16.2) gene in fragments of adult A. cervicornis was targeted for knockdown using a single siRNA construct. RT-qPCR analysis of HSP16.2 gene expression was performed between filtered seawater, no template control siRNA (NTC), and siRNA targeting HSP16.2 across four genotypes of A. cervicornis with known differences in thermal susceptibility (two heat-tolerant and two heat-susceptible genotypes). There was no significant difference in HSP16.2 gene expression due to the treatment of HSP16.2 siRNAs versus controls, but we did identify a single genotype-driven effect that corroborates evidence that A. cervicornis heat tolerance is driven largely by genotype. No difference in photophysiological performance or mortality was observed between experimental and control treatments. There were, however, some differences in mortality and HSP16.2 expression among genotypes. Our results reveal that siRNA-mediated knockdown was not successful for this species and gene and thus further optimization is needed prior to broader applicability of siRNA-mediated knockdown in corals. We provide an assessment of potential methodological improvements to support the development of future reverse-genetics studies in corals. This significant increase in hydroclimatic extremes, which affected millions of people, is closely linked to a 50% enhancement in quasi-biennial variability in East Asian summer monsoon rainfall and associated Yangtze River discharge. This quasi-biennial variability is strongly coupled with intensified tropical baroclinic wave activity in the Indian Ocean under enhanced ENSO forcing. During the later period, amplified westward propagating downwelling baroclinic Rossby waves in late boreal spring and summer strongly suppressed vertical mixing and entrainment in the western tropical Indian Ocean, maintaining anomalously warm sea surface temperatures. This anomalously warm ocean enhanced local atmospheric convection and tropospheric heating, which remotely strengthened the western Pacific subtropical high via atmospheric Kelvin wave processes, thereby increasing moisture transport and summer monsoon rainfall over the Yangtze River Basin. A 70% increase in the phase speed of the baroclinic Rossby waves during the later period also favoured the seasonal phase locking of ocean wave–driven tropical Indian Ocean warming with the East Asian summer monsoon.
