  Throughout most of the 1990s the American lobster resource constituted New York's most valuable marine commercial fishery. In recent years lobster has accounted for over 30% ofNew York's ex-vessel landings value for all marine species. New York has also been the third largest harvester oflobster in the US, second only to Maine and Massachusetts. Most ofNew York's lobster harvest has come from the waters of Long Island Sound (LIS). New York residents had a record harvest of over 8.8 million pounds oflobster in 1997. That same year New York and Connecticut residents harvested approximately 11 million pounds of lobster from Long Island Sound. In recent years New York residents have landed approximately two-thirds of the total LIS harvest and Connecticut residents have accounted for almost all of the remaining LIS landings.
