American lobster (Homarus americanus) monitoring in New York waters, with emphasis on Long Island Sound

  The American Lobster resource constitutes New York's most valuable marine commercial fishery. In recent years lobster has accounted for over 30% ofNew York's ex-vessel landings value for all marine species. New York State is also the third largest harvester oflobster, second only to Maine and Massachusetts. Most of New York's lobster harvest comes from the waters of Long Island Sound (LIS). In 1997 approximately 11 million pounds of lobster were harvested from Long Island Sound. New York residents landed approximately two-thirds of the total LIS harvest.
