Description:Four surface meteorological parameters; namely, air temperature, barometric pressure, wind direction and wind speed reported by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) ERB-1, Experimental Reporting Buoy, and by merchant ships, were compared with data derived from the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) small-scale analyzed charts for a 6-day period during January 1971. The ERB-1 was located about 200 n.mi. east of Norfolk, Virginia. The NODC results of the NOMAD (Navy Oceanographic Meteorological Automatic Device) N3S buoy with ship comparisons in the Gulf of Mexico during January 1968 are evaluated with the comparisons of ERB-1 and ship reports near ERB-1. Air temperatures observed by ERB-1 and N3S are considered excellent. The ships near the two buoys reported much wider ranges of air temperatures. The majority of surface pressures from both buoys and all ships are acceptable; however, the buoys are generally low. In general, the surface wind directions from the ERB-1 buoy and all ships are acceptable. NOMAD N3S wind directions are also acceptable, but most wind directions are about 15 degrees from the desired gradient surface wind direction in a veering (clockwise) direction. Wind speeds from ERB-1 and ships in the vicinity of ERB-1 are considered fair to poor with ERB-1 reporting values that are mostly high. N3S and surrounding ship reports in the Gulf of Mexico reported wind speeds that are considered very good.
