Description:This study involves the variance and percent of acceptance of surface marine environmental observations from ships and from the NOMAD (Navy Oceanographic Meteorological Automatic Device) N3S buoy. The study is based on the distribution of the differences between actual observations from ships and from the N3S buoy, with data derived from surface pressure charts and sea-surface temperature composite charts for January and July 1968. The ranges, means, and standard deviations of differences were computed from the acquired data differences. Statistical probabilities for ship and buoy observations occurring within specified limits of derived environmental values were computed; comparisons were then made between the two observing platforms. Results showed that the quality of N3S observations for January and July air- and seasurface temperatures and for January surface-wind directions were more reliable than those from ships. Both platforms were nearly similar in observing surface pressures and wind speeds. The July surface-wind direction observations for the N3S buoy compared unfavorably to the ship observations. In general, the ship observations showed a greater variance in difference for each parameter except for the July surface-wind direction.
