Description:A joint Western Region (WR)/National Storm Survey Team was assembled following the major winter storms of December 25, 1996, through January 5, 1997, which struck California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, producing high winds, ice storms, and significant precipitation that resulted in record flooding and numerous mudslides. The survey team was formed to review the operations and effectiveness of products and services of the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) Weather Service Forecast Offices (NWSFOs) and NEXRAD Weather Service Offices (NWSOs) in Boise, Seattle, Portland, Medford, Eureka, Sacramento, Monterey, Reno, and the River Forecast Centers (RFCs) in Sacramento and Portland prior to and during the event. The primary focus of the survey was the flood event associated with the storms.
