Description:"Endangered blue, fin and humpback whales (Balaenoptera musculus, Balaenoptera physalus and Megaptera novaeangliae) feed within Gulf of the Farallones (GFNMS) and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries (CBNMS). Large commercial vessels1 utilize an internationally approved traffic separation scheme (TSS) when they transit these sanctuaries, heading to and from ports in San Francisco Bay and major ports in the Pacific Rim. The co-occurrence of these two global populations (whales and ships) in space and time creates an elevated risk of vessel strike, and thus mortality, to whales ...This report contains several specific recommendations for policy and management, education and outreach, and research and monitoring within Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank sanctuaries. The majority of these actions -- which are discussed in greater detail in the report -- would be implemented through partnerships between NOAA and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)"--Executive summary.
