Ocean indicators are crucial for translating ocean science and data into practical metrics, guidance, and tools informing on the state and health of the ocean that can be directly applied by policymakers, practitioners, and the public. Despite their critical importance, ocean indicators trail behind those for continental areas, limiting effective monitoring and policy integration. Developing reliable, comparable, and regularly updated ocean indicators, backed by a unified international framework, is essential for delivering coherent, actionable insights that can guide global goals and protect the ocean's future. This paper establishes a scientific foundation for ocean indicators through international and multidisciplinary collaboration, presenting defined criteria and a set of pilot indicators for the ocean’s physical, biogeochemical, biodiversity, and ecosystem aspects. The proposed framework offers a solid foundation for generating indicators that not only track the ocean state but also provide outputs for application in informing policy and decision-making. Our research compared four astrogeodetic systems together for the first time at similar observing sites: the zenith cameras COmpact DIgital Astrometric Camera (CODIAC) and VErtical by STArs (VESTA), and the robotic total station-based astrogeodetic systems QDaedalus and Total Station Astrogeodetic Control System (TSACS). We deployed the four systems at 32 sites on a 190 km profile along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, using 14 primary sites for direct comparison and subsequent performance evaluation with analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least-squares bias analysis. The results demonstrate that CODIAC is able to have an internal consistency better than ± 0.05 arcseconds for its 20-minute observations. Relative to CODIAC, the results suggest that, for 45-minute occupations in a typical astrogeodetic campaign, the VESTA, QDaedalus, and TSACS are capable of 0.15–0.20 arcsecond accuracy. One of the main goals of the survey was to fill gaps in geoid validation data in this region; these results will be used to test the National Geodetic Survey’s new GEOID2022 model and design future field campaigns. This survey also highlights the challenges of designing an astrogeodetic profile in a busy commercial corridor and serves as an instructive experience in 21st century operational geodetic astronomy. Our goal was to conduct the first coordinated assessment of terrestrial wildlife across North America's vegetated coastal wetlands. We elucidated spatial patterns related to geographic and landscape differences and temporal patterns of wildlife diversity and abundance. Using camera traps deployed with a consistent methodology across 25 National Estuarine Research Reserves and 7 additional sites in North America, we documented 146 species (104 birds, 36 mammals, 6 herpetofauna) using wetlands for foraging, resting, and as nursery habitat. Most species were native, though non‐native species dominated island sites. Wetlands with greater landscape heterogeneity attracted distinctive wildlife assemblages, as did wetland–upland ecotones. Many species, particularly mammals, used wetlands almost exclusively at night, and wildlife abundance was low when wetlands were flooded. Our findings demonstrate the significant role coastal wetlands play in wildlife support, a service that may decline with accelerating sea‐level rise. This coordinated approach offers a model for broad‐scale wildlife studies and highlights the importance of incorporating top‐down perspectives and a landscape approach into coastal conservation planning. All methods were tested in three different areas with different geological and environmental conditions, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico; Key West, Florida; and Cocos Lagoon and Achang Flat Reef Preserve, Guam. It is demonstrated that all satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) methods have increased accuracy when the results are aligned with higher-accuracy ICESat-2 ATL24 track bathymetry data using the iterative closest point (ICP). SDB vertical accuracy depends more on location characteristics than the method or optical satellite instrument used. All error metrics considered (mean absolute error, median absolute deviation, and root mean square error) can be less than 5% of the maximum bathymetry depth penetration for at least one method, although not necessarily for the same method for all sites. The SDB error distribution tends to be bimodal irrespective of method, satellite instrument, alignment, site, or maximum bathymetry depth, leading to the potential ineffectiveness of traditional error metrics, such as the root mean square error. However, our analysis demonstrates that performing detrending where possible can achieve an error distribution as close to normality as possible for which error metrics are more diagnostic. With increasingly frequent and severe storms, living shorelines have been shown to effectively limit coastal erosion and loss; however, there is still uncertainty regarding the effects of living shorelines on nekton communities as compared to natural marshes and gray coastal protection strategies like bulkheads. Here, we present a dataset of living shoreline‐associated nekton species recorded over a 20‐year period in North Carolina, USA. We harmonized nekton abundance and biomass data from five different studies (each ranging in duration from 2 to 4 years) across 12 living shorelines with paired natural marshes and, in some cases, bulkheads. These studies used different gear types and sampling methodologies, and therefore future users of this dataset must carefully consider the limitations of different subsets of the data and ensure that they do not make direct catch comparisons across sites that used different methodologies. Altogether, we identified a total of 62 species groups at living shorelines, natural reference marshes, and bulkheads across three categories (i.e., crustacean, mollusk, and fish) between 2001 and 2024. We identified 49 species groups on living shorelines, 49 species groups in natural marshes, and 5 species groups on bulkheads. For each living shoreline and paired natural marsh and/or bulkhead shoreline, we report individual species counts, biomass (when available), and the sampling method. In addition, we report on the living shoreline type, age, and location. In total, these data provide vital insight into how living shorelines function as habitat for nekton, and they can be used to evaluate living shoreline effectiveness as a predominant nature‐based solution for coastal protection and biodiversity enhancement. Although the U.S. has a substantial coastline, the world’s largest exclusive economic zone, a skilled maritime labor force, advanced technology and research, and the second-largest seafood market in the world, U.S. aquaculture production has not kept pace with global trends. For over a century, Alaska has been synonymous with American seafood. While this has primarily been linked to wild-capture fisheries, recent declines in fishing revenue, advances in aquaculture science, technology, and policy, and increasing public and private investment in aquaculture have made Alaska the next frontier for U.S. aquaculture development. However, despite the popular perception of Alaska as a vast open space, the state’s coastal waters are some of the nation’s busiest, with almost every aspect of life and the economy of coastal Alaska intrinsically tied to the ocean. Strategic expansion of aquaculture requires responsible siting led by innovative spatial modeling to integrate pertinent spatial data into an ecosystem-based approach to aquaculture that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable planning. Such an approach facilitates equitable use of resources, and those environmental considerations are addressed at the onset. Presidential Executive Order (E.O.) 13921, Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth (May 7, 2020), and E.O. 14276, Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness (April 17, 2025), called for the expansion of sustainable seafood production in the U.S. to ensure food security; provide environmentally safe and sustainable seafood; support American workers; establish coordinated, predictable, and transparent federal action; and remove unnecessary regulatory burdens. Directives under E.O. 13921 require the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with relevant federal agencies and state and tribal governments to identify Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs) suitable for commercial offshore aquaculture development. To improve our understanding of the stock identity of individual dolphins taken as bycatch in this region, we compared images of the dorsal fins of bottlenose dolphins that stranded with evidence of fishery interactions (FI+) to the Mid-Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin Catalog (MABDC). We obtained stranding data from NOAA Fisheries for 715 FI+ bottlenose dolphins from Virginia (VA), North Carolina (NC), and South Carolina (SC) from 1996 to 2019; approximately two thirds of these records included dorsal fin images. For records for which images were available, we applied restrictive criteria for image quality and dorsal fin distinctiveness and compared the remaining 145 distinctive FI+ individuals to the MABDC. We matched 18 dolphins to regional catalogs and assigned stock identity to 13 of the matches; two were from migratory coastal stocks and 11 were from small estuarine stocks in NC and SC. Our analysis demonstrates how the risk of bycatch varies across bottlenose dolphin stocks along the Mid-Atlantic coast, provides an important feedback information loop to stranding responders and researchers studying dolphins in the field, and informs conservation efforts to address bycatch of bottlenose dolphins in this region. The national MWP utilizes a sentinel-based monitoring approach by collecting and analyzing bivalves as surrogates for coastal water pollution. Mussels and oysters are sessile organisms that filter and accumulate particles from water; therefore, measuring contaminant levels in their tissue is a good indicator of local chemical contamination. Dreissenid mussel tissue samples from 66 monitoring sites across the Great Lakes Basin from Wisconsin to New York were analyzed in this study. Recent comprehensive assessments suggest that large-scale mitigation efforts to limit warming are falling short, and all feasible future climate projections, including those that represent optimistic emissions reductions, exceed the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C or 2° warming targets during this century. While avoiding further CO2 emissions remains the most effective way to prevent environmental destabilization, interest is growing in climate interventions—deliberate, large-scale manipulations of the environment aimed at reducing global warming. These include carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentrations over time, and solar radiation modification (SRM), which reflects sunlight to lower surface temperatures but does not address root CO2 causes. The effects of these interventions on marine ecosystems, both direct and in combination with ongoing climate change, remain highly uncertain. Given the ocean's central role in regulating Earth's climate and supporting global food security, understanding these potential effects is crucial. This review provides an overview of proposed intervention methodologies for marine CDR and SRM and outlines the potential trade-offs and knowledge gaps associated with their impacts on marine ecosystems. Climate interventions have the potential to reduce warming-driven impacts, but could also alter marine food systems, biodiversity and ecosystem function. Effects will vary by pathway, scale, and regional context. Pathway-specific impact assessments are thus crucial to quantify trade-offs between plausible intervention scenarios as well as to identify their expected impacts on marine ecosystems in order to prioritize scaling efforts for low-risk pathways and avoid high-risk scenarios. Model results show that offshore wind changes develop in the front‐left quadrant even when the hurricane center is relatively far (100–200 km) from the coastline. Notably, as the hurricane nears land, both its radial inflow and tangential wind speeds intensify over the ocean (by 80% and 13%, respectively) in the storm's front‐left and rear‐left quadrants. The storm's maximum surface wind speed is enhanced (by 14%) before landfall and shifts to the left of the storm track. Momentum budget analysis indicates that land‐induced friction reduces tangential wind speed over land, which is advected offshore, increasing the imbalance between the pressure gradient force and the combined Coriolis and centrifugal forces. This imbalance, along with radial and azimuthal advection, drives the development of offshore wind asymmetry. As the storm center moves closer to land, enhanced angular momentum advection due to enhanced radial inflow further strengthens the tangential speed in the rear‐left quadrant. Sensitivity experiments reveal that slower‐moving hurricanes develop offshore wind asymmetry earlier, while increased land roughness amplifies its effects, leading to stronger maximum radial, tangential, and total wind speeds at landfall. These findings enhance our understanding of hurricane wind evolution near landfall and underscore the need to consider multiple factors in forecasting and disaster preparedness. Competition for space, environmental concerns, and aesthetic preferences have greatly slowed the development of significant aquaculture or offshore wind (OSW) industries in the USA. The co-location of OSW and aquaculture has long been explored and practiced in Europe and Asia as a solution to address increasing congestion and minimize impacts from ocean-based OSW and aquaculture industries. Here, we review the state of knowledge about the co-location of OSW and aquaculture, including several ecological and social factors, and find a complex socio-ecological landscape. We apply these insights to the US context, highlighting specific obstacles and opportunities for co-location in the USA. We divide the EEZ into 10 regions and assess the feasibility of co-location in each, using a macro-siting approach and qualitative characterization to discuss the potential in each region. We discovered several barriers to co-location in the USA, including inappropriate regulatory structure, significant public opposition to ocean industries, and a lack of incentives for wind and aquaculture companies to operate together. Creative, locally specific approaches could improve relationships between fishing communities and emerging ocean industries through co-development or cooperative cultivation, fishery enhancement, or resource sharing. The physical conditions, renewable energy goals, and public and political support make the Northeast and Gulf of America regions the most opportune for co-location of OSW and aquaculture in the USA. Endangered sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus have not been included in a UME; however, recent strandings have shown commonalities that warrant investigation. We analyzed 4 live-stranded sperm whales (‘case’ whales) in waters of the southeastern USA from 2020-2022 to determine if common factors contributed to death and to inform future management decisions. Thorough investigations were performed, including necropsy, histopathology, and infectious disease and biotoxin testing. Major findings were related to emaciation; there was no evidence of infectious disease or significant toxin exposure. Two of the whales had ingested fishing gear and other marine debris that may have contributed to emaciation. Prey identification and stable isotope analysis (SIA) of these whales combined with SIA of 4 additional sperm whales (‘reference’ whales) provided further life history data for this species. Prey consumed were primarily cephalopods from families consistent with known sperm whale diets in other parts of the world, and SIA suggested that case whales had similar foraging habitats and trophic levels compared to reference whales. The common finding of emaciation in case whales despite typical prey consumption emphasizes the need for continued research on factors that may influence foraging efficiency or prey availability and quality in this region. Furthermore, finding ingested fishing gear in 2 whales supports continued efforts to monitor and mitigate human impacts to support long-term survival and recovery of sperm whale populations. During this time, prey die‐offs occurred that were documented in fishery surveys, and bottlenose dolphins consumed unusual prey items based on gross observation. We analysed the stomach contents of bottlenose dolphins that stranded from 2009 to 2014 and summarised frequency of occurrence (%F) and numerical abundance (%N) of prey species overall, annually and seasonally. Prey species with numerical abundance ≥ 5% overall were tested for significant differences annually and seasonally. From the stomach contents of 114 dolphins, the most frequently occurring (%F) and numerically abundant (%N) species were Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus; %F = 54%; %N = 16%) and star drum (Stellifer lanceolatus; %F = 45%; %N = 16%). Star drum, hake (Urophycis sp.) and squid (family Loliginidae) numerical abundances differed annually, while spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), silver perch (Bairdiella chrysoura), bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli), hake and squid numerical abundances differed seasonally. Bottlenose dolphins consumed significantly more hake during the 2011 UME compared with 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. This dietary shift to hake likely occurred due to increased hake availability relative to other prey items typically available during this period. Numerical abundances peaked in the following seasons: summer for spot, winter for silver perch and bay anchovy, spring for hake, and the fall for squid. Our findings demonstrate that bottlenose dolphins can shift their diet when prey distributions are altered to maintain their caloric needs.
