While integration of climate change into planning is critical, a recent global analysis found that relatively few MPAs have incorporated climate change considerations into formal management planning processes. Despite this, sessions and discussions at the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) demonstrate that climate-adaptive management already permeates MPA processes, from day-to-day management to design and implementation. Here we review the results of an IMPAC5 knowledge exchange session that brought together a diverse group of MPA managers, Indigenous community representatives, and thought leaders to discuss improved integration of climate change into MPA management and planning. The session demonstrated the vibrancy, diversity, and engagement represented in the dynamic and fast-moving field of MPA climate change management and planning. In addition to sharing unique and diverse perspectives, the session leveraged the experience of experts to identify new and common challenges and gaps. As a result of this session, we present five recommendations, building on previous work, to guide MPA managers in the explicit and successful incorporation of climate adaptation into management planning and implementation. These recommendations hold the goal of ensuring an equitable, adaptive, and robust global MPA system. This review also provides a valuable summary of the vast repository of experience and knowledge of climate adaptive management contained within the MPA management community, and with community and Indigenous partners. In contrast, built marine structures, such as hardened shorelines, offshore energy and aquaculture infrastructure, and artificial reefs, are increasing in extent—and, in some locations, represent over 80% of nearshore, structured habitat. When introduced into the seascape, built marine structures inevitably interact with natural habitats, but these structures are not typically designed to support natural systems. This approach often results in overall harm to natural systems, further impeding marine conservation goals. However, there is growing recognition within the ocean management and engineering community that built marine structures can be strategically designed to minimize their negative impacts and potentially support ecosystems and associated biota. We synthesize the best available science and provide bright spot examples of how leveraging built marine structures to mimic or facilitate natural habitats can help recover biodiversity, augment ecosystem services, and rehabilitate degraded habitats, providing positive outcomes for people and nature in a changing climate. Despite these bright spots, we caution that built structures typically have overall negative environmental consequences for natural habitats and should not be used in lieu of conventional habitat restoration or conservation or to justify the destruction of natural habitats. Recent legislation in Texas has allowed oysters to be grown off-bottom (suspended in cages). To understand the connections between bioextraction and off-bottom oyster aquaculture, the Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS) model was applied, indicating nutrient-related degradation of water quality. The Farm Aquaculture Resource Model (FARM) was used to determine that a typical oyster farm can remove about 4900–7100 lb. N yr−1, with an approximate value of $41,966 to $232,511 based on engineered (wastewater treatment plant) technologies. A promising and innovative nutrient management strategy, bivalve mariculture can be utilized as an additional strategy complementary to existing nutrient management strategies. This work aimed to assess P. ostreatus for its hydrocarbon degradation potential in estuarine conditions. In vitro experiments evaluated nutrient amendments based on P. ostreatus carbon: nitrogen: phosphorous (C: N: P) ratios to optimize mycelium growth, increase degradation efficiencies, and reduce potential nutrient runoff in broader applications. Image analysis was used to track mycelium growth response to various salinities, nutrient amendments, and oil types. Subsequent evaluation of alterations within the saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltene (SARA) fractions constituting Louisiana sweet crude (LSC) was conducted via SARA analysis. Results indicate that P. ostreatus mycelium tolerates estuarine salinities, with maximum growth between 5 and 15‰. Relative to 0‰, growth was reduced at salinities >25‰, but positive growth was still observed. Nutrient amendments significantly increased growth over 7 days relative to untreated samples (p < 0.0001). The combination of ammonium chloride and potassium phosphate yielded optimal mycelium growth after 7 days. Mycelium and nutrients significantly altered saturate (p = 0.0015) and asphaltene (p = 0.0124) fractions in LSC. This study suggests that mycelium growth is viable under estuarine salinities and can be enhanced with nutrient amendments. Introducing nutrient factors was shown to influence oil degradation. Results also indicate that mycelium can reduce recalcitrant oil fractions. Thus, this study highlights the adaptability of P. ostreatus to estuarine conditions and its response to nutrient amendments, all while offering a promising approach to crude oil bioremediation. Traditional models have difficulty capturing detailed relationships between remote sensing reflectance (Rrs), biogeochemical properties (BPs), and inherent optical properties (IOPs) in these complex water bodies. We developed a robust Mixture Density Network (MDN) model to retrieve 10 relevant biogeochemical and optical variables from heritage multispectral ocean color missions. These variables include chlorophyll-a (Chla) and total suspended solids (TSS), as well as the absorbing components of IOPs at their reference wavelengths. The heritage missions include the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Aqua and Terra, the Environmental Satellite (Envisat) Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP). Our model is trained and tested on all available in situ spectra from an augmented version of the GLObal Reflectance community dataset for Imaging and optical sensing of Aquatic environments (GLORIA) (N = 9,956) after having added globally distributed in situ IOP measurements. Our model is validated on satellite match-ups corresponding to the SeaWiFS Bio-optical Archive and Storage System (SeaBASS) database. For both training and validation, the hyperspectral in situ radiometric and absorption datasets were resampled via the relative spectral response functions of MODIS, MERIS, and VIIRS to simulate the response of each multispectral ocean color mission. Using hold-out (80–20 split) and leave-one-out testing methods, the retrieved parameters exhibited variable uncertainty represented by the Median Symmetric Residual (MdSR) for each parameter and sensor combination. The median MdSR over all 10 variables for the hold-out testing method was 25.9%, 24.5%, and 28.9% for MODIS, MERIS, and VIIRS, respectively. TSS was the parameter with the highest MdSR for all three sensors (MODIS, VIIRS, and MERIS). The developed MDN was applied to satellite-derived Rrs products to practically validate their quality via the SeaBASS dataset. The median MdSR from all estimated variables for each sensor from the matchup analysis is 63.21% for MODIS/A, 63.15% for MODIS/T, 60.45% for MERIS, and 75.19% for VIIRS. We found that the MDN model is sensitive to the instrument noise and uncertainties from atmospheric correction present in multispectral satellite-derived Rrs. The overall performance of the MDN model presented here was also analyzed qualitatively for near-simultaneous images of MODIS/A and VIIRS as well as MODIS/T and MERIS to understand and demonstrate the product resemblance and discrepancies in retrieved variables. The developed MDN is shown to be capable of robustly retrieving 10 water quality variables for monitoring coastal and inland waters from multiple multispectral satellite sensors (MODIS, MERIS, and VIIRS). We use the Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity model in conjunction with a particle transport Lagrangian tool to evaluate the general pathways of material transport among mesophotic areas, focusing on the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and the Pinnacles Trend over 2 years. Additionally, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to identify the minimum necessary model configuration for capturing the impact of kilometer-scale circulation on connectivity metrics. Our results reveal year-round low connectivity potential between mesophotic areas with high seasonal heterogeneity in transport direction and dispersal distances due to the high variability of the currents fields. In the study areas, material dispersion appears to be primarily driven by the extension of shelf currents and by submesoscale circulations (SCs). Sensitivity analysis suggests that high-resolution velocity fields with horizontal grid spacing capable of resolving SCs and temporal resolution of 6 hr or less are required to accurately capture the impact of small-scale circulations on connectivity, especially in summer, when currents are weak and submesoscale fronts are essential to establish dispersion patterns. Quantifying total toxicity in bivalves requires analytical techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are an efficient but only semi-quantitative method for measuring clam toxicity. PSTs (STX eq.) were measured in split clam samples (n = 16) from the Alaskan Arctic using ELISA and HPLC methods to develop a preliminary linear model for conservatively estimating total toxicity in clams from ELISA toxin values (R2adj = 0.95, p < 0.001). Profiles of PST congeners and total toxicity using HPLC were also assessed in additional clams (n = 36 additional, n = 52 total). Clams contained mostly potent PST congeners, and over half of the clams had PST concentrations above the seafood regulatory limit. These data will help assess the exposure risks of PSTs in Arctic marine food webs, as harmful algal bloom activity is predicted to increase as the Arctic continues to warm. During expeditions in 2021 and 2022, fragments of the mesophotic octocoral Swiftia exserta were collected from the northern Gulf of Mexico and transported to aquaria at federal facilities in South Carolina, Florida, and Texas. In fall of 2021 and 2022, several of these fragments spawned in captivity, providing an opportunity to learn about their reproduction and inform future restoration activities. Broadcast spawning occurred on 19 and 20 October, 2021, and on 20 days from 29 September to 7 November, 2022. These spawning events permitted detailed observations of spawning behavior and timing, and yielded over 2,400 oocytes. Individual spawns were preceded by a distinctive “spawning posture” in the polyps, lasting between five minutes and two hours, and may have been cued by light. Swiftia exserta larvae settled and developed at comparable rates to other broadcast spawning octocorals, becoming swimming planulae by three days post spawn (dps) and starting to settle by 14 dps. These observations represent the first such records for S. exserta and, more broadly, for any mesophotic coral in the Gulf of Mexico, providing important insights for the restoration of these species. This investigation lays the foundation for future work to explore the influences of seasonal environmental variables, such as light and temperature, on spawning and reproductive seasonality in this species. The rise in built structure coverage is concurrent with losses and degradation of many natural habitats. Although historically associated with net negative impacts on natural systems, built infrastructure—with proper design and innovation—could offer a largely unrealized opportunity to reduce those impacts and support natural habitats. We present nine recommendations that could catalyze momentum toward using built structures to both serve their original function and benefit natural habitats (relative to the status quo, for example). These recommendations integrate functional, economic, and social considerations with marine spatial planning and holistic ecosystem management. As the footprint of the Anthropocene expands into ocean spaces, adopting these nine recommendations at global scales can help to ensure that ecological harm is minimized and that, where feasible, ecological benefits from marine built structures are accrued. For example, catch limits are typically defined annually over regional scales, fishery bycatch rules are defined at fine spatial scales on daily to annual time scales, and aquaculture and energy lease areas are defined over decades for subregional permitting at intermediate scales. Similarly, these activities require synthesizing monitoring data and mechanistic knowledge operating across different spatial resolutions and domains. These needs drive a growing role for models that predict animal presence or densities at fine spatial scales, including daily, seasonal, and interannual variation, often called species distribution/density models (SDMs). SDMs can inform many ocean management needs; however, their development and usage are often haphazard. In this paper we discuss various ways SDMs can and have been used in stock, habitat, protected species, and ecosystem management activities as well as marine spatial planning, survey optimization, and as an interface with ecosystem and climate models. We conclude with a discussion of future directions, focusing on information needs and current development, and highlight avenues for furthering the community of practice around SDM development and use. Extreme events—those events that result in the highest water levels and widest extent of flooding—are often the most costly, cause the largest number of deaths, and have been occurring more frequently in many areas of the U.S. due to sea level rise (SLR). Monitoring is critical when assessing vulnerability of an area to coastal flooding and the frequency at which extreme events occur. Many engineering designs and management practices are based on these extreme exceedance probability statistics. However, reliably estimating extreme event frequency requires long observational periods of record, limiting the number of National Ocean Service (NOS) tide gauges where these statistics can be derived and leaving large coverage gaps in the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services’ (CO-OPS) Extreme Water Level data products along U.S. coastlines. To address this concern, CO-OPS performed the current study to focus on 2 primary objectives: 1) to enhance the coverage of the CO-OPS extremes products by using tide gauges with short periods of record to generate exceedance probability statistics, and 2) to test the robustness of the guidelines laid in the U.S. Interagency Task Force (ITF) on Sea Level Change technical report, “Global and Regional Sea Level Rise Scenarios for the United States: Updated Mean Projections and Extreme Water Level Probabilities Along U.S. Coastlines” (hereafter referred to as the “ITF Report”) to downscale estimates from larger-scale, regionally derived extreme water levels (EWLs) at 1-degree spacing along the U.S. ocean coastlines.
