Description:"A proposal to convene a conference on ecosystem management of marine resources grew out of a 1990 workshop convened by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), to discuss implementation of the 1988 amendments to the Marine Mammal Protection Act. particularly those involving marine mammal-fishery interactions (NMFS 1991). The workshop recognized that the problems presented by multi-species management responsibilities under the Fisheries Management and Conservation Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act are more complex than the problems that the current suite of single-species management tools were designed to address. The workshop participants also noted that a growing amount of information from research at the ecosystem level is available. and that this information might usefully be converted to practical application"--Preface.
