Description:A program for displaced commercial fishers already in place was expanded and continued under this grant funding. A total of 40 participants grew two million oysters with assistance from project personnel. Permits, cages, deployment gear, seed oysters and informal training were provided. Assistance with problems and marketing were given on an as-needed basis. Fifteen of the 40 participants have continued to grow oysters after the grant using their own resources. A social and economic evaluation was performed as a part of this project; it showed that attitudes towards private mariculture have changed since the project started.
