Description:In 2003, the United States Congress provided the National Marine Fisheries Service with a $5.0 million appropriation for blue crab fisheries affected by reduced harvest and sales of blue crabs. Funding was been provided to each of the Mid-Atlantic States in proportion to the amount of the catch landed by each state, according to specific guidelines: the funds may be used only for: (A) personal assistance with priority given to food, energy needs, housing assistance, transportation fuel, and other urgent needs; (B) assistance for small businesses including fishermen, fish processors, and related businesses serving the fishing industry; (C) domestic product marketing and seafood promotion; and (D) state seafood testing programs. Virginia's share of the funds for disaster relief was $1,210,077.00.
