Description:Genetic algorithms are a tool for solving problems, particularly where there are many possible good solutions and it is relatively easy to tell when you have found one but hard to decide what will produce the best solution beforehand. Locating the North Wall of the Gulf Stream is such a problem. We demonstrate the application of Genetic Algorithms to this problem, as has been applied in NWS operations since 2003 in support of ocean forecasting.
