Description:The objectives of this study were to: 1) use the δ18O (delta-18O) signature to identify adults of the 2002 year class that returned to spawn in the York River and track recruitment of the year class over time; 2) compare age as determined by δ18O signatures to age estimates based on the Cating (1953) method of scale-based age determination for American shad in the York River; and 3) investigate the potential of whole otoliths as structures for age determination of American shad in the York River by comparing age as determined by δ18O signatures to whole otolith-based age estimates.
