Description:A stock assessment strategy for American shad based on index-removal (IR) and change-in-ratio (CIR) estimation of run strength and exploitation rate requires that the relative abundance of pre-spawning fish (upriver migrants) and post-spawning fish (downriver migrants) be assessed. Our approach is to test the assumptions of these two methods during a moratorium when few fish are being harvested.
