Description:Coastal wetlands worldwide are threatened by disrupted hydrology, urbanization, and increasing sea levels, necessitating rapid assessment of their value as fish habitat to aid in conservation. In the southeastern USA, coastal wetlands include tidal creeks, many of which have headwaters that include coastal ponds. Previous studies have found that juvenile Common Snook Centropomus undecimalis and Tarpon Megalops atlanticus can use coastal ponds as nursery habitats. The objective of this study was to assess whole fish assemblages (i.e., potential prey or competitors of sport fish) and environmental gradients (e.g., salinity, depths, amount of submerged vegetation) that are associated with the coastal ponds in a representative landscape of southwestern Florida.
