Description:NOAA-5 infrared imagery were used to determine statistics of existing and developing eddies on the western boundary of the Gulf Stream. The satellite data were then combined with in situ data to study the physics and dynamics of both a new-born eddy and one which had been in existance for a considerable time. A simple linear model of flow over a topographic feature similar to the Charleston Bump was developed.
