Description:Subsidence, brought about by lowering of the water table through pumping, has affected more than 3,000 square miles in southern Arizona, including parts of the metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Tucson. Serious problems are beginning to arise caused by the subsidence itself and cracks in the earth (earth fissures) which result from subsidence....This report proposes a plan for monitoring subsidence in Arizona. Its aim is to provide a basis for a coordinated subsidence monitoring effort.
