Description:The past forty years have seen large increases in nutrient inputs to coastal waters as a result of population growth and greater production of food and energy. This has led to rapid and substantial changes to coastal ecosystems around the world (Boesch 2002). Within the United States, nutrients now pose the largest pollution threat to coastal waters (NRC 2000; Howarth et al. 2000), with an estimated two-thirds of coastal rivers and bays moderately to severely degraded from nutrient pollution (Bricker et al. 1999).
