Description:Following more than a year of planning, the Wave Propagation Laboratory of NOAA and the Atmospheric Technology Division of NCAR, together with other agencies and institutions, carried out a major field study at the Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) during September 1978. Named PHOENIX*, the project used research-instrumented aircraft, a surface meteorological network, radars, lidar, acoustic sounders, microwave radiometers, optical wind sensors, rawinsondes and fixed-level balloons, and the BAO tower itself in amassing the basic data set.
