Description:It has recently become clear through advances in both theoretical and experimental meteorology, that improvements in modeling the transport and dispersion of pollutants will require on-site measurements of the atmosphere. This requirement has in turn generated questions about our ability to make such measurements. To help answer these questions the Environmental Protection Agency sponsored at NOAA's Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) an experiment designed to assess the ability of in situ and remote sensors to measure the mean and turbulent properties of the lower atmosphere. The tests were carried out over a 3 week period in September 1982. They were designed and conducted with the goal of gaining a knowledge of the accuracy, precision, and general performance characteristics of a variety of meteorological sensors that are commonly used in environmental studies. The results should prove valuable in designing experiments, understanding data from field studies, and interpreting the inherent limits of accuracy and precision possible in transport and diffusion models.
