Description:Shrimp has been a culinary delight in Japan for many hundreds of years where it has traditionally been served on rare and very special occasions. In the 1960's, the Japanese consumer began demanding more shrimp: imports jumped from 3,600 metric tons in 1962 to 11,700 tons in 1963.J./ Imports and prices have since skyrocketed; in 1971 Japan imported 78,874 tons of shrimp worth US$214 million. (See figures 1 and 2.) Some trade sources predict Japan's imports of shrimp may exceed 120,000 tons by 1980, and total consumption may reach 155,000 tons.
