Description:This report provides bycatch estimates of six marine mammal species incidentally taken in the 1996 Northeast (New England) multispecies sink gillnet fishery. The estimated total take of all marine mammals in the 1996 fishery was 2,364 animals (CV = 17%). This included 1,185 harbor porpoise (CV = 25%), 855 harbor seals (CV = 27%), 116 white-sided dolphins (CV = 114%), 69 common dolphins (CV = 139%), 49 gray seals (CV = 56%), and 90 harp seals (CV = 55%).
