Description:Measurements of hydrocarbons in ocean waters throughout the world are presented to supply baseline information. The data indicate that most surface and near-surface waters have from 1 to 10 parts per billion total hydrocarbons. Both biogenic and petroleum hydrocarbons appear to be ubiquitous, with some indications of more petroleum hydrocarbons in coastal waters and shipping lanes.
