Description:The physical and chemical oceanography and climatology of the Northeast Monitoring Program (NEMP) geographic region of interest (fig. 1.1) has been studied by EDIS project groups for the Bureau of Land Management under Interagency Agreements. The final reports of these studies, one covering the mid-Atlantic region (the continental shelf from Cape Hatteras to Long Island) written by Williams and Godshall, (1977) and the other covering the Georges Bank region (the Georges Bank and Gulf of Maine) written by Godshall et al. (1980), provide descriptions of seasonal and monthly marine conditions of the region. These studies were based primarily on data summarized from the archives at the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and the National Climatic Center (NCC). However, these previous reports did not consider data on a cruise by cruise, case by case basis. Therefore, present EDIS support of NEMP does include case studies based on archived data.
