Description:In 1999 at Lower Granite Dam, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) continued its evaluation of transportation vs. inriver migration of spring/summer chinook salmon smolts and began a new evaluation of transportation vs. inriver migration of steelhead smolts. The studies were designed to compare survival to adulthood between smolts transported to below Bonneville Dam and those allowed to migrate downstream volitionally from the Lower Granite Dam tailrace under optimized inriver survival conditions. We also continued to monitor the prevalence of marine mammal abrasions on adult spring/summer chinook salmon at Lower Granite Dam.
