Description:"An Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared for the NOAA/NMFS James J. Howard Laboratory seawater intake system repair, Sandy Hook, New Jersey, dated August 2014. The EA provides a comprehensive analysis of potential environmental effects for the proposed action to install two seawater intake wells and piping, replace approximately 1,000 square feet of riprap revetment along the waterfront and renovate interior space of the laboratory building. The proposed action component to repair the seawater intake system will ensure a reliable seawater supply for the eleven individual seawater laboratories and aquarium at the James J. Howard Laboratory for continuing research, and the component to renovate interior space will finish previously unfinished spaces, convert some laboratory space to office space, and upgrade electrical and mechanical systems. The repair of the seawater intake system will not only improve the reliability of the existing system, but repair recent damage from Hurricane Sandy. Neither individual no cumulative environmental impacts of the proposed action will be significant, and most impacts will be short-term and localized to the project footprint"--Cover letter summary.
