Description:As competition for popular marine sportfish grows, tournament managers will have to consider alternatives to the traditional fishing tournaments. Options such as catch and release, using `measure in' techniques, are familiar; another alternative is to add underutilized species to existing tournaments or to develop new tournaments around these species. The advantages include diversification, added excitement, increased demand for saltwater fishing, better utilization of the resource, improved public relations, greater economic impact and greater media exposure. This report encourages tournament managers to consider this alternative.
