Description:This report describes the wide variety of projects undertaken by the University of Rhode Island Sea Grant Program in the years 1979 to 1981. It is a departure from previous reports, which were annual. We may boast a little. But that is justified, for the National Sea Grant College Program is a highly efficient network of university based programs in marine research, education, and technology development. Making sure the new knowledge that results reaches those who need it is a critical component of the national effort. And Rhode Island's program is no less efficient and innovative. The structure of Sea Grant provides for coordination by the Office of Sea Grant in the U.S. Department of Commerce (NOAA) of work done by universities in the nation's coastal and Great Lakes states. As a result, there is not only healthy competition for support but an opportunity for scientific cooperation in addressing regional and national issues. Our efforts range from finding ways to improve the efficiency of methods and equipment for industry to providing new perspectives on science and technology for professionals. Over the years we have found we can rely on the assistance and interest of people in industry, in government agencies at all levels, and among the general public in accomplishing our goals. No wonder Sea Grant is successful. We hope you enjoy our report.
