Description:In a multi-part study termed the 'Convective Overturn Experiment' (CONVEX), scientists used the Gulf of Maine to explore the physics of overturning and mixing with an integrated program of observation and modeling. The research addresses basic questions concerning the kinematics and energetics of mixed layer formation in winter with an emphasis on water column convective instability, sinking, and mixing in the presence of strong wind stress and surface cooling. This report describes the hydrographic measurements obtained in January 1997, on the first of seven University of New Hampshire cruises occurring over two winters.
