Description:The history of the Atlantic and Gulf coast oyster fisheries, over the past one hundred years, is a diary of continued overfishing, environmental degradation, habitat loss and stady decline of natural oyster populations. During the past three decades, further insult has been added by two diseases, commonly termed MSX "(Haplosporidium nelsoni)" and Dermo "(Perkinsus marinus)." Two workshops have been held to develop a plan for the restoration of the American oyster industry in these states, and this paper is an attempt to bring the results of the two workshops together into a single, focused plan.
