Description:The behavior of clays under combined static and cyclic loading conditions is investigated with particular application to deep-water compliant offshore structures. In order to develop more reliable methods for analyzing and predicting the behavior of pile shafts supporting tension leg platforms (TLPs), this report attempts to identify and evaluate the effects of important factors on the behavior of clay elements subjected to the complex loading history typical of a TLP foundation system. An hypothesis provides good predictions of the number of cycles to failure as well as evolution of shear strains during undrained cyclic direct simple shearing. Directions for future research are discussed.
