Description:Sarasota Bay is a diverse ecosystem of barrier islands and estuaries along the southwest Florida coast. The Gulf Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) provides passage through the entire system through a series of manmade channels, canals, and cuts. Now used extensively for recreation, the ICW has contributed to population growth in the region and altered the environmental characteristics of the estuary. This publication, the first in a series on southwest Florida waterways, discusses the history and development of the area, current conditions, nautical charts, and the future of the region.
