Description:This publication is a by-product of a project entitled "Climate of the Northern Hemisphere, 1851-1900, Compared to Contemporary Climate," funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. An initial task in carrying out this project was to identify all available non-digital sources of long-term climatic data located at the National Climatic Center (NCC) and at other major repositories, such as the Atmospheric Sciences Library of NOAA and the Meteorological Library of the British Meteorological Office at Bracknell, United Kingdom. This information comprises the contents of this inventory. A relatively large number of data sources was found. Because of the differing nature of our sources, it was decided to divide the report into four parts: one dealing with source materials found at the NCC reference library; a second dealing with sources found at the NCC foreign data library; a third dealing mostly with data summaries for the U.S. stations on microform; and, a fourth dealing with sources identified by the Climatic Research Unit of the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia and by R. S. Bradley at the University of Massachusetts. Each entry in Parts I-III contains the following information: (1) major geographical area covered; (2) the name of the publication; (3) the date the publication was published; (4) the source(s) of the data; and, (5) a brief description of the contents of the publication. In addition, foreign data library publications are preceded by a "GL Number," which is an internal NCC locator code. These inventories are designed to serve as a guide to users interested in locating and obtaining 19th Century climatic data.
