Description:The purpose of this training manual is to illustrate, through concise case studies, how the subjective analysis of profiler-derived winds can be used in detecting meso- and synoptic-scale upper-air features which affect the analysis and forecasting of warm-season weather events. Occasional references to conceptual models of profiler wind interpretation are included; a more complete coverage of these models is treated in Training Manual No. 4. We will not attempt to explain or comment on every signature detected in the data because several features are observed which are not fully understood, and the focus of the manual is to introduce the data to the forecaster. Other routinely available products essential in forecasting and analysis (e.g., radar and satellite data) will be shown, and the incorporation and assimilation of all these data will be stressed.
