Description:The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) collects and manages data from the U.S. purse seine fishery for tropical tunas in the western-central Pacific, as part of U.S. obligation under the South Pacific Tuna Treaty. Information from U.S. vessels licensed to fish under the treaty is collected by the NMFS Pacific Islands Regional Office in American Samoa and transmitted to the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) in La Jolla, California, where scientists computerize logbooks, landings, and biological data collected from the fleet.
