Despite its ecological importance, in-situ bottom temperature data are not routinely included in fisheries management. This is in part due to limitations in spatial and temporal data availability and the disparate nature of in situ data sources. To address this need we developed a new data product, FIShBOT (Fishing Industry Shared Bottom Oceanographic Time Series), for the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf. FIShBOT is a standardized and gridded data product integrating subsurface oceanographic measurements from fisherydependent and fishery-independent data sources. Currently, FIShBOT aggregates in-situ, subsurface temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen records using a modular data processing workflow (using the Python programming environment), which are then synchronized and hosted on ERDDAP™ a scientific data server (Simons and John, 2022). A companion archive dataset for previous aggregations is available with a unique Digital Object Identifier for reproducibility. FIShBOT addresses common challenges for in situ data, including spatial and temporal gaps, by leveraging sensor networks on both commercial fishing vessels and research vessels. The model leverages the Flexible Modeling System (FMS) coupler and its innovative exchange grid to enable a robust and scalable two-way interaction between the atmosphere and ocean. The atmospheric component is built on the non-hydrostatic Finite-Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) with the latest version of the SHiELD physics parameterization suite, while the ocean component is the latest version of MOM, supporting kilometer-scale, high-resolution and regional applications. Validation of this new coupled model is demonstrated through a suite of experiments, including idealized hurricane simulations and a realistic North Atlantic case study featuring Hurricane Helene of 2024. By analyzing the storm intensity, its structure, and its effects on the ocean phenomena such as the upwelling and sea-level changes, the results reveal that air–sea interactions are effectively captured. Scalability tests further confirm the model's computational efficiency. This work established a unified modular cornerstone for advancing high-resolution coupled modeling with significant implications for weather forecasting and climate research. Through a consensus-driven and iterative approach, we define REA as: a structured review process that aims to maximize rigor and objectivity given assessment needs and resource constraints; is transparent about trade-offs, risks, and biases; and can integrate multiple types of evidence. Our standardized definition of REA will improve transparency and facilitate decisions about the appropriate levels of rigor required for those who commission, conduct, and use REAs for environmental decision-making. In the eastern North Pacific, over the past three decades green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas ) have become more commonly observed along the west coast of the United States, particularly along the urban Southern California coast. Understanding the habitat use patterns and basic demographic rates of these turtles is important for resource management. To address these data gaps, we used spatial patterns created by natural geochemical cycling (i.e., marine isoscapes) to inform sea turtle movement and habitat use over time. This was done by analyzing stable isotope values of bone growth layers in turtle humeri and analyzing the values with age and size data obtained through skeletochronology. This approach allowed us to recreate the movements and foraging patterns of green sea turtles in Southern California. We present vital life-history and demographic data, including the oceanic stage duration, timing of ontogenetic habitat shifts, and multi-year foraging patterns. Sea turtles depart the oceanic habitat recruiting to neritic foraging grounds around 6.6 years of age, indicated by nitrogen isotope values (δ15N), but turtles may do so as early as one year old, or may remain in oceanic zones for much longer. Once settled into isotopically distinct coastal habitats, it was common for turtles to establish multi-year residency, and while many appeared to consume at least some seagrass, stable carbon isotope values (δ13C)—a primary indicator of critical habitat—suggested that it was not the primary diet item of most individuals. Collectively, these findings fill information gaps about green turtle life-history, which have immediate application to ongoing regional management efforts. Despite its importance, detailed benthic ocean observations are limited and representation of the benthic carbon cycle in ocean and Earth system models (ESMs) is mostly empirical with little prognostic capacity, which hinders our ability to properly understand the long‐term evolution of the carbon cycle and climate change‐related feedbacks. The Benthic Ecosystem and Carbon Synthesis (BECS) working group, with the support of the US Ocean Carbon & Biogeochemistry Program (OCB), identified key challenges limiting our understanding of benthic systems, opportunities to act on these challenges, and pathways to increase the representation of these systems in global modeling and observational efforts. We propose a set of priorities to advance mechanistic understanding and better quantify the importance of the benthos: (a) implementing a model intercomparison exercise with existing benthic models to support future model development, (b) data synthesis to inform both model parameterizations and future observations, (c) increased deployment of platforms and technologies in support of in situ benthic monitoring (e.g., from benchtop to field mesocosm), and (d) global coordination of a benthic observing program (“GEOSed”) to fill large regional data gaps and evaluate the mechanistic understanding of benthic processes acquired throughout the previous steps. Addressing these priorities will help inform solutions to both global and regional resource management and climate adaptation strategies.
