Description:In March and April 2026, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) Alaska Regional Office, in partnership with NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), convened a series of three workshops-in Anchorage, Juneau, and Kodiak-focused on sharing the Aquaculture Opportunity Area Atlas for the Gulf of Alaska (Atlas) and development of a new Aquaculture Explorer webtool. The workshops brought together more than 100 individuals from across Alaska, including aquaculture and fisheries industry members, Tribal representatives, state and federal agency staff, nonprofit organizations, researchers, and interested individuals. The workshops were designed to improve understanding of the Alaska Aquaculture Opportunity Area (AOA) identification process, demonstrate how the Atlas and associated digital resources support aquaculture planning and permitting, and secure feedback to guide development of an Aquaculture Explorer planning tool in Alaska.
