Description:In 2022, the National Mussel Watch Program (MWP) conducted an assessment of the presence, distribution, and magnitude of legacy organic contaminants in sediment from the Great Lakes Basin. To achieve this monitoring objective, the MWP track these legacy contaminants by utilizing a sentinel-based monitoring approach by collecting and analyzing bivalves and sediment as surrogates and environmental proxies for coastal water pollution. Sediment samples from 25 monitoring sites across the Great Lakes Basin were analyzed in this study. For sediment analysis, nine legacy contaminant groups were targeted, specifically butyltins, chlordanes, chlorobenzenes, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), dieldrins, endosulfans, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCHs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in addition to 2 individual contaminants, chlorpyrifos and mirex.
