Description:The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) fisheries statistics reporting system represents a joint effort ofVMRC and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and combines mandatory and voluntary reporting systems which result in the production of timely fisheries management data. A comprehensive statistics program such as this provides the VMRC with the information needed to make management decisions and the ability to determine the effects of those decisions on resources, provides other state and federal agencies data with which to measure the effects of environmental alteration, and provides technical information necessary to develop fishery management plans. Virginia fishery statistics, an integral component of a regional fisheries data network developed by NMFS, also supports the interjurisdictional management activities of the MidAtlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.
