Description:In 2024, a strong El Niño at the beginning of the year transitioned to neutral conditions in boreal spring and then to La Niña-like conditions by year’s end. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—continued to climb to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 422.8±0.1 ppm, which is a 52% increase over the pre-industrial level of ~278 ppm. The growth from 2023 to 2024 was 3.4 ppm, equal to the observed change between 2015 and 2016, which is the highest in the record since the 1960s.
