Description:In June 2003, the Standard Atlantic Fisheries Information System (SAFIS) was launched in Maryland. SAFIS is an Internet based data entry system developed by the ACCSP that allows a seafood dealer to enter their individual buys directly into a usable, near real-time database. The initial rollout of SAFIS in Maryland was for the striped bass fishery. Maryland commercial striped bass harvest monitoring utilizes data from harvesters and a group of 33 check stations composed of registered seafood buyers. Starting in June 2003, established check stations have been offered the option of entering their data through SAFIS on a voluntary basis. This would replace the historical daily phone summary reports of fish and the weekly submission of the paper record of each fisherman’s checked fish at the station. Beginning in 2004, all new check stations were required to use SAFIS.
